On Eagle's Wings

Four Brampton students and six others join Eagle's Wings this year, a tour of native reserves in Northern Ontario designed to bring hope and love to youth at risk on the reserves.
Jennifer Bird, Nathan Gerber and Bob Simpson spoke to the club about this unique summer program designed to help young people on seven reserves in the north.
"Young people on reserves have lost their identity and hope for the future. I think we can make a difference and show them that we care," said Jennifer of Brampton.
The students will visit seven reserves for a week each, setting up camps and talking to youth at risk.
Nathan Gerber, also of Brampton sang two original compositions and talked eloquently about the needs of youth in the north.
"These kids have enormous potential if they only believed in themselves. We need to invest in them to see rewards," Nathan said.
"It's painful to watch 13-year-old pregnant girls try to cope. In the north family units break apart and these teenage kids are too young to know how to be parents. They have few role models."
Hopelink sponsors the program but Nathan says it's unfortunate that this program only runs over the summer.
"The long-term goal is to run this program all year," Nathan said.
