Minister Jeffrey our speaker

Barry introduced Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Labour. Barry has known Linda for many years; she has served not only the City of Brampton but also the Province of Ontario.

Linda is very pleased to be speaking at Rotary today. These are interesting times, politically. Even through a global recession, Brampton is a much better place than 2003.

Linda has worked hard to safeguard the province’s workforce. Her job is to represent the employers as well as the people who get injured. Smart employers know to encourage workers in workplace safety. The number of young worker injuries and illnesses in Ontario continues to drop steadily over the years. Workplaces are hearing the message of safer workplaces and young workers are learning more about their rights and responsibilities.

Linda is also the Minister who is responsible for seniors. She spoke about the passage of the Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit Act that will allow Ontario’s seniors to renovate their homes so they can live in them safely and continue to be more independent.

Seniors who own or rent homes and people who share a home with a senior relative will be able to receive the new tax credit up to $1500 each year. The credit will make it more affordable to complete home renovations and installations to help seniors stay in their homes more safely and comfortably and prevent falls and injuries.

Linda concluded that the Government’s work does not come to a standstill. No matter who the leader is, the Government will continue to work for the people. She will work with anyone who helps Brampton and is here to work on Brampton’s behalf.
