Diabetes is Serious! 11 Million Canadians currently have diabetes or prediabetes. 14 Million Canadians will have Diabetes or Prediabetes by 2027. One Canadian is diagnosed with Diabetes every three minutes and 1.5 million Canadians have type 2 Diabetes and don't know it.
What is Diabetes? It is a disease that occurs when your bloor sugar is too high. This happens when your body cannot produce enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin that it produces. It is a chronic  often debilitating disease.
Types of Diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and Prediabetes
Prediabetes: Blood glucose levels are higher than normal but below the level to be diagnosed. There is a higher chance of developing Type 2 diabetes and there may be no symptoms.
Type 1: About 10% of people with Diabetes have Type 1. People with Type 1 must inject insulin multiple times a day. Diagnosed most often in children and young adults and cannot be prevented.
Type 2: About 90% of people with Diabetes have Type 2. The pancreas does not work properly.
Gestational: This is Diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It affects 3.7% of all pregnant women. Gestational Diabetes cannot be prevented and places women at higher risk for type 2 Diabetes.
Signs & Symtoms: Need to urinate often, feeling very thirsty, rapid changes in weight, feeling very tired, blurred vision, many infections, cuts and bruises are slow to heal, tingling or loss of feeling in the hands and feet. For Type 1 Diabetes, symptoms appear quickly and for Type 2 there are often NO symptoms. Sometimes symptoms may be slow to develop. Many people who have Type 2 Diabetes don't know they have it.
