Leading the United Way

Sharon Douglas, from the United Way of Peel, spoke to us about the increased role the organization is playing in our community, numbering 1.2 million.
She presented some alarming statistics with regard to the number living in poverty (1:7), the % of domestic abuse (20%) 1:10 seniors are abused, and our region has the longest waiting list for housing. (13,500.) The United Way sponsors 53 agencies and administers $8.1 million. They are jointly funded by the Region of Peel. Their 3 target groups are Mental Health, drug abuse and housing. Sharon is currently the Assistant Director of Community Investment for the United Way, Peel Region.
