JA alive and well

Junior Achievement is the world's largest and fastest growing provider of business and economic education programs. Supported by business, service clubs, and industry, Junior Achievement is an international non-profit organization dedicated to teaching young people about the principles and dynamics of business and the Canadian enterprise system.
Last week Gale Carey, president and CEO of Junior Achievement, Toronto and York, praised and thanked our club for its long-term involvement in JA.

JA's mission is "to inspire and educate young Canadians to value free enterprise, understand business economics and develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills."
ManagerProgram Angela Young talked about programs JA offers.
Business Basics for elementary students Business Basics is designed to provide practical information about the organization and operation of a business in a free enterprise system. By means of interactive, fun, and age-appropriate activities, students explore the fundamental elements of a business.
Economics of Staying in School for Grade 8 The Economics of Staying in School emphasizes the importance of education in preparing for the future. Through exploration of their future lifestyle expectations and realities, students realize the advantages of remaining in school and consider the consequences associated with dropping out of school. ESIS provides students with real life situations so they may see the consequences of their actions, both positive and negative.
Personal Economic fo Grade 7 Personal Economics helps students discover how success is linked to future preparation  in terms of their career, life, and financial choices. Through classroom activities and discussions, students assess their own skills and interests, examine possible educational & career paths, and learn about personal and financial planning and management.
High School There are several programs for high school students. Global Learning of the Business Enterprise (GLOBE) is an international education program providing students the opportunity to form an import/export company as a joint-venture with a classroom in another country.
Student Venture provides students with the opportunity to experience the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship by starting and operating a classroom-based business enterprise. With assistance from a business consultant, the class is required to select a product or service to sell, elect officers, capitalize by selling shares, and create business plans, budgets, and advertising strategies.

Gale also talked briefly about the consolidation of JA in Toronto York Peel and Simcoe County.
"The consolidation will allow us to develop efficiencies so that we can reach even more students," she said.
In four years JA wants to grow its reach from the current 58,000 students to 70,000 students in the four areas.
