John Sanderson introduced Matt Anderson from William Osler Health System and Matt introduced his team of Ken Mayhew, CEO, William Osler Foundation (replacing Ann Randall who is now retired) and Jacqueline Ritchie. Mat spoke about their vision which is to design health systems that service the Global Community – driven by diversity. Their mission statement is Safe and Compassionate Care.The William Osler Health System is made up of Brampton Civic Health Centre, Etobicoke General Health Centre and Peel Memorial Health Centre. In Brampton, we are not excited about the Emergency Room. This year, there were approximately 120,000 patient visits to the ER which makes it the busiest ER room in the country. There is rarely below 350 patients per day. Most other hospitals are in the 70-80 range. This community has a higher national average of diabetes and 20% of the youth are obese or over weight. Brampton Civic had 7500 births last year, the busiest birth centre in the country.
Peel Memorial will be a hospital when complete. Full approval was granted August 2011 and demolition began Feb. 15, 2012. In 6-9 months, site will be mobilized, all of the hazardous materials will be removed and demolition of existing buildings will be accomplished.
Peel Memorial will try to get people earlier in their disease state. The rate of dialysis in this region is the highest in the province. What they will try to do in Peel Memorial is to stop people from going into crisis, get them a bit earlier.
The future of Peel Memorial Hospital is to focus on health and wellness in our community and it will be the leading edge of health care. The services the hospital will provide will include urgent care, day surgery and diagnostics. In William Osler Health Centre, the ER wait is now 4-8 hours and at the urgent care centre it will be 45 minutes to one and a half hours. Doors will open in 2015.
