Hon. Robert Runciman speaks Monday

The Rotary Club of Brampton has arranged for Robert Runciman, Minister of Public Safety and Security for the Ontario Government, to speak to the club on September 29th, 2003.

Bob Runciman has been the Member for Leeds-Grenville since 1981. A lifelong resident of Brockville, his unique blend of political and life experience makes him well qualified to serve the people of Ontario.
On April 15, 2002, Mr. Runciman was appointed Minister of Public Safety and Security, with responsibility for the consolidated issues of policing, corrections, and public safety as they relate to the economy and the security of Ontario's borders following the events of September 11th.
Prior to his most recent appointment, Mr. Runciman was Minister of Economic Development and Trade. He was also Chair of Cabinet, and served on the Priorities, Policy and Communications Board, the Economic Resource Policy Committee, the Environment Committee and the Committee on Privatization and SuperBuild.
Mr. Runciman was also the Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations. From 1995-1999, he was Solicitor General and Minister of Correctional Services. He brought about dramatic and far-reaching improvements in public safety and policing. This included boot camps for young offenders, adding 1,000 new frontline police officers, a $5 million survivors tuition fund for the families of peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and completely revamping the Ontario Parole Board to ensure that public safety was paramount. Mr. Runciman also tabled a bill on Canada's first Sex Offender Registry and introduced a new computer system to track serial predators.
Mr. Runciman began his political career as a municipal councillor in Brockville. Before his election to the Ontario Legislature, he was employed in production management in the chemical industry. He has significant experience in the labour relations field, as both a union president and contract negotiator.
Mr. Runciman has also worked as a reporter for two Eastern Ontario daily newspapers. His business experience has included ownership of a weekly newspaper and commercial printing business. Mr. Runciman is married to the former Jeannette Bax. They have had three children: two daughters, Sue and Robin, and one son, Bill (deceased). They are the proud grandparents of Iylish.
