Dr David Borts says there have been tremendous advances in the treatment of heart attacks. He spoke to the club on Monday.
In the past 20 years death by heart attack has been reduced from 40 per cent to 2 per cent. There are three main reasons for this dramatic reduction - massive publuc health campaigns, medical drug therapies and invasive treatments like angioplasty, stints and bypass surgery.
Dr. Bort says the new Bramptyon Civic Hospital will double the number of cardiologists working today. The hospital will have the ability to do angiograms by 2007 and perhaps angioplasty by 2010.
Dr. Borts says for a for health heart don't smoke, walk 30 minutes every day, reduce portion sizes to control weight, take an aspirin a day, lower cholesterol with healthy eating habits and liquor in moderation is good for you.
