Gun Stoppers a success

Steve Rowe, of Peel Regional Police, thanked the club for helping to get Gun Stoppers off the ground in the region; the first program of its type in Canada.
In 19 months, Steve says they have been able to take 44 guns or replicas and five knifes out of Peel high schools.
"You have made a difference to our community," he told club members at last week's meeting.
Gun Stoppers pays for tips about weapons in high schools. The program here is based on a similar program in Charleston, where they pay $100 for any tip leading to the discovery of a weapon.
A replica is seen as the same as a real gun in the commission of an offence, says Steve.
Rotary provided $7,500 for the launch in 2002 and the money is used to promote the program as well as pay for tips.
"The program is working but we are running out of funds and we are hoping Rotary will want to continue to support Gun Stoppers," Steve said.
