David helped with MPP Kyle Seebak’s local federal campaign in the last election and it was here that he was introduced to this great initiative for Canadian youth. David spoke of many issues facing youth in democracy today including; under representation by Youth and their actual vote participation declining over the years.
David’s parents came from the Soviet Union in the early ‘80s and worried about the state of communism and it effect on people.
His visit to the FORUM for young Canadians in parliament in Ottawa;
A much bigger forum this year ~ 160 participants with ages ranging from 15-19 years old all visited Parliament Hill to participate in a simulation of Parliament including commons meeting and mock elections. The forum included at least one person for every province & Territory at the conference.
They were able to meet politicians, senators and tour Parliament Hill. They had panel discussions and simulations. Discussed issues ranging from party politics to ballot counting and electioneering.
David shared with the audience what he learned during their meetings and breakout sessions, including some of the main priorities facing Canadian youth today; Health, National Defense because of the F35 scandal and its related costs, but the largest issue was Education and its high cost and barriers to entry.
David spoke of how the social networks such as Facebook allowed all participants to connect and stay connected from sea to sea to sea, and they will do for years to come as they start shaping public policy and participate in Canadian discussions.
Next year David going to Carleton Public Affair & Policy Management where he hopes to build on his knowledge
