Doug's Dairy

For several years Rotarian Doug Leighton has been traveling to Arusha, Tanzania to work on the Rotary 3H project. Doug's recent visit saw one part of the project, the dairy, become a near reality.

Soon the production of cheese will begin. Here is Doug's report from Maji ya Chai shortly before retuning home.

"Today I was able to visit several farms and test the women on their milking skills. I was impressed. They are using the skills they were taught, at our sponsored course, to high levels of cleanliness. It is a huge difference in the way they were doing, it eight months ago on my last visit.

So far each farmer has achieved ten out of ten on the simple test on procedure. They are so pleased with themselves that they are showing their neighbours the procedures. I will continue for another three days and will have done a cross section of forty farms of the one hundred and fifty members of the Meru Farmers Association.

On Wednesday Mamma Nayoga, Mamma Palangeo and I will present the successful candidates with a diploma of excellence. The ceremony will be held at the dairy.

The dairy has been cleaned up and the grounds have been tended to. There seems to be some excitement in the air as the locals see positive action towards the completion of their dairy." .....Douglas
