Dittie speaks of Sinter Claus

Dittie was our guest speaker, and she introduced some Dutch Christmas spirit as she spoke to us about the Sinter Claus traditions. Not only found in Holland, it is celebrated in Germany, Belgium and other countries, and dates back to 300 AD. when St. Nicholas was made a bishop. He died on December 5th 343 AD, and has been celebrated ever since, as perhaps the original "Santa Claus" although that is a westernized version, and not at all the same thing.

There were many Dutch people in Canada, coming here in the 50's as there was little food in Holland after the war and few jobs. They adhere tothe Sinter Claus traditions to this day.   Dittie discussed some of thecustoms, and displayed several items- including chocolates and sweets. She made marzipan dipped in chocolate which we were all able to sample. There was only one gift for each child, from the parents, and they celebrated over2 days, with no such thing as Boxing Day.
