District Governor Ian Ferguson

We had an enjoyable visit from our District Governor, Ian Ferguson who gave us an update on happenings in Rotary locally and around the world.  Presently there are 34,000 Rotary Clubs globally,   membership is increasing in our District, and attendance at the District Leadership Training was up by 35% this year. 

A focus at the District Level is to complete its Strategic Plan.  The goal is to create an environment for clubs to succeed with the District becoming a resource for the individual clubs.  The final plan will be ready by the New Year, however it should be remembered that this is a living document and will be updated regularly.

There are three major initiatives from the Rotary International Strategic Plan.  The first being a public information and awareness campaign.  Locally there will be a television campaign on CTV in the latter part of January and early February.  Another part of this campaign will focus on a brand revitalization study.  The goal being to clearly define what Rotary is and what Rotarians stand for, and motivate our current membership and inspire potential members.

The second initiative is the Rotary Foundation, to encourage members to contribute as well as participate in decision making as to what projects we spend this money on.  The third initiative is regarding membership, with a focus on retention, attraction, and expansion.

The eradication of polio is still a priority of Rotary International, with only three endemic countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria left to conquer this disease.  Once this is accomplished, Rotary members can be proud of the legacy they have established globally.
