How many Rotarians does it take to change a light bulb?
Here is a wonderful opportunity to find out!
Oakville Rotary Past President Alistair Yule had attended
the London area PETS training & learned of this terrific hands on community project.
The clubs in Oakville have been running a "Day of Giving" for the past 4 years, providing service within our communities. This year, DG Syd would like to expand it throughout the district.
On the Day, teams of Rotarians, family, and volunteers will be helping seniors and others with odd jobs around the house including:
house cleaning
changing light bulbs
gardening
checking fire alarms
minor repairs
moving furniture
running errands
laundry & drinking tea
Request forms are distributed to potential clients through HOME CARE AGENCIES as well as SOCIAL SERVICES. An ad could be placed in the local newspaper. The Oakville clubs comment "It is BETTER TO WORK through AGENCIES rather than solicit clients directly.
We have found it best for a coordinator to contact each potential client to verify the size of the assignment and whether suitable materials and tools are available."
The London clubs have provided a guide to timelines and tasks as well as sample sign up forms for volunteers and clients, spreadsheet layouts to help track volunteers, clients and activity feedback survey forms
We will provide this via the district website, so there will be sufficient time to prepare for the proposed May date.
Depending on the number of clubs involved in a town, one or two committee members per club works well and as many volunteers as you can get - but be prepared for the possibility that you may have more volunteers than tasks until the program is understood.
