Cruising for charity

Justin French, business development manager for Carnival Cruise Lines introduced a unique fundraising idea to the club Monday - Cruising for Charity.
Carnival offers special pricing for charitable groups aboard its cruise line. A markup on that price of $20US per person goes to the charitable group for 3-5 day cruises and Carnival matches the amount raised. The matching funds rise to $40 per person on 7 day cruises and $80 per person on 10 day cruises.
In addition, Carnival offers a free berth for every eight sold, which can be auctioned for additonal fundraising.
Justin told club members charitable groups need to plan well in advance - 10 months - for booking and 4-6 months of promotion to ensure a successful event.
Justin told the club that cruises continue to grow as the vacation of choice. The satisfaction rate is 98.7 per cent for cruises compared to 71 per cent for a land-based hotel holiday, he said.
He said Carnival is the largest and most popular cruise company worldwide. About 61,000 people cruise on one of Carnival's 20 ships every week, he said.
And there seems to be growing demand. The Queen Mary II is now the largest cruise ship in the world but Justin says more ships are already in the pipeline and they just keep making them bigger.
