CPSS Interact i s a club at Central Peel Secondary School i n Brampton, with a focus on social advocacy and community service. We direct our efforts t o foster leadership, increase advocacy, and maximize our impact. We raise awareness by taking part i n weekly meaningful discussions with t he student body, along with organizing a
monthly service project with a focus on a certain social justice issue. For the month of June, CPSS Interact highlighted the Indigenous Water Crisis during Indigenous Awareness Month.

From June 11th t o June 21st, CPSS Interact hosted “Run f or Water,” a charitable event i n which students of Central Peel Secondary School ran/biked to raise awareness about the Indigenous Water Crisis. While accumulating a total distance of 1 800 km, CPSS Interact simultaneously educated students about t he Indigenous Water Crisis through our social media campaign and weekly discussions. We delved into various issues battled by the Indigenous communities i n Canada and various political and personal stories regarding t he water crisis. All
monetary proceeds from “Run f or Water” went t o Water First, an NGO dedicated t o addressing water challenges in Indigenous communities through education, t raining and meaningful collaboration.

As one of Canada’s guiding charitable organizations, Water First has developed a program committed to working with Indigenous communities t o provide aid and improve local water-related conditions. Their “Water Internship Program” supports young Indigenous adults aged 18-35 by providing training for careers i n water science. Upon completing t he program within 15 months, interns receive a certification required to become a water operator along with opportunities t o develop various hard and soft skills. However, t he program itself does not only benefit t he participants, but also t hose living i n Indigenous communities by improving overall access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation needs i n a sustainable manner.

Fortunately, CPSS Interact’s Run f or Water event was very successful with over 100 students and teachers participating! Collectively, we were able to fundraise over $1000 for Water First!

As active citizens i n our community, we must be proactive leaders and remain informed with current events. It is essential t hat Indigenous communities have access to safe and affordable drinking water. We encourage others t o learn more about t he Indigenous Water Crisis, and donate t o help all Indigenous communities have access t o clean water, now and f or future generations: https://waterfirst.ngo/donate/
