Club assembly update
The Chair of each committee was asked to give a brief update as follows:
Matt - Rotary Glen Board
They haven’t met lately, not much has changed, still hammering out some details, a bit of water problem in the basement.
Malcolm – Grants and Awards
Looking for more members, they meet once per month and they receive
between six and twelve requests. They are looking to find organizations
that need money. They get requests from schools, charities; individuals
and sports teams and they have a $40,000 budget this year. The five
Rotary Clubs in Brampton and all high schools in Brampton have a
relationship and $1000 is donated each year. The criteria for students’
financial needs include moving on to higher education and have worked in
the community. It is interesting to see the kinds of requests that are
received. Grants and Awards provide a report of grants given out during
the year.
Carole – New Generation
This is new. Two of the clubs have been chartered this year. One of the
past presidents who went to the U.N. was in Montreal on the model
debate. There has been a fall off in clubs sponsoring students and one
of the challenges is to get host families.
Rotoract is coming along, few new members. Through the Jazz at the Glen,
Feb 5th, they will understand how to host a social program. Thanks to
people on the committee and she appreciates how much work is involved.
Willard – Children’s Charities
Willard gave an update on the coin show. 2012 dates have been set which
are the last Sunday in April, the first Sunday in September and the
first Sunday in December. They are trying to schedule the same dates for
each year, will make approximately $10,000 profit this year.
Dennis – International Committee
There was a meeting two weeks ago. They are setting up policy guidelines
and will continue to meet regularly to finalize their approach. They
are just investigating at this point. They had some conversation on
polio. Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria still have problems with
polio. Rotary International are putting lots of effort to eradicate in
these countries. A sub-committee has been formed and they will be in
contact with other clubs in the city hoping to raise $100,000. The
framework has started.
