Rotarian Olu Olowu from Nigeria was visiting on his way to the Interantional Conference and gave a brief description of his role in his Rotary Club.

Chris Beth Cowie, VP of the North Park Interact Club, 2004, who spoke so eloquently at The RC of Brampton's Celebration of 70 years in Rotary, elaborated on her experiences in Bolivia as a student in the Canada World Youth programme.

As a student at the University of Guelph in International Development, Chris Beth applied to the Canada World Youth a programme associated with CIDA.
Matching students from Canada with students from Bolivia;  young people from both countries were hosted by families for three months at a time. In both countries the students volunteered on projects to improve the community.

In Camiri Bolivia, Chris Beth and her counterpart worked in a school for children and young adults with disabilities. Part of the work required the volunteers to plan for Education Activity Days, which focused on furthering the Millenium Development Goals.

Chris Beth and the programme participants also had to volunteer in the community so they cleaned and repaired a plaza and a school.

It was here that Chris Beth learned the committment of volunteers varies from person to person.

In November the students involved in the programme moved to Perth Ontario and lived there for the next three months. In Perth the Bolivians experienced winter and snow for the first time.

The students worked in the food bank in Perth and ran a nutrition prrogramme and a Breakfast programme at the school. Examining Canada's legal system and the waste managment system was a true learning experience for the Bolivian volunteers.

Reflecting on her experinces in the Canada World Youth programme, Chris Beth says she learned the value of persistence and determination as she overcame the challenges and the struggles of living in another country and working as part of team of volunteers.

Chris Beth plans to finish her education before she travels again. She is currently a member of the new Roteract Club sponsored by the RC of Brampton.
