Volunteers support local families
Rotary welcomes Jorun Rucel from the Brain Injury Association. June is Brain Injury Awareness Month so we are delighted to have Jo speak to us. This Association was founded in 1986 by concern and courageous family members. The Association is a volunteered based community group of professionals and volunteers offering assistance and information to survivors of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), their families and support network .They work to promote the prevention of ABI, improve quality of care/life and provide education. The Association is involved in the following services:. Caregiver relief program
. Peer support mentoring program
. Monthly support groups for ABI survivors and caregivers
. Helmets on kids program
. Social and recreational activities

The majority of ABI survivors are between 15 & 30 years old and about half million in Ontario living with ABI. 53% of homeless people in Toronto have a history of brain injury and the number of people living with brain injury is increasing every year. BIA is not funded by the Ministry of Health; therefore it’s hard to have any long-term planning. Funding comes from fundraising, donations, private and corporate sponsors.
