Blind Man Running
Posted by Stephen Rhodes
Blind Man Running is how Richard Holloway describes himself in his quest to raise money for worthwhile causes. Richard has run 11 full marathons, 10, half marathons, logged 14,000 kilometers and raised $55,000 for organ donor research.
He has raised another $38,000 for Team Diabetes
His message is simple, "people can make a difference in their community."
Richard lost his sight 12 years ago. His weight ballooned to 397 pounds before he decided to change his life with a regimented exercise program at the YMCA. His weight dropped to 185 pounds and he took up marathon running.
He told the club that diabetes touches everyone from newborns to 80 year-olds.
As a marathon runner he requires guides, but he jokes that he often loses them over the course of the run. "Last time I beat my guide by three minutes," he said.
"My volunteer work is the rent I pay for being here," he said. "But I know you can make the world a better place."
