The popular event, planned this year on June 8, will allow participants to use rollerblades, bicycles or skate boards to navigate the course through Brampton's park system.
Blade-a-thon chairman Rob van Kessel says this year the event is open to cyclists, skate boarders and bladers and we hope to be able to raise even more money for a great cause.
In 2002, the club raised $15,000 for cancer research. Rob says he hopes to raise $25,000 this year.
The 2003 event is scheduled for Sunday, June 8, beginning at Gage Park and running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. There are two possible courses to navigate.
To register participants can call Sue Scarfone at 905 451 4460 or e-mail sscarfone@ccsont.org or fax Sue at 905-451-7657. Pledge sheets are available by contacting that phone number or by download at www.rotary7080.org/brampton.
Participants must still register by phone after downloading a pledge form.
"This could be a great family outing with mom and dad cycling or blading along with the kids and it's a wonderful opportunity to raise money for a great cause," says Rob.
Gage Park will be hopping with activity. There is live entertainment, great prizes, food and beverage, games of skill, demonstrations, a beer garden and even a dunk tank. Local celebrities will also be in attendance.
High school students can use their involvement in Blade-a-thon as part of their required community service work. The event qualifies for four hours of community service.
"Raise and collect pledges by asking friends, family, co-workers, employers and neighbours for donations," says Rob. "And then come out for a great day and share in the experience of doing good community service while having fun."
We want to make this an event where the whole family can be involved. Many people have been touched by cancer and here is an opportunity to contribute to finding a cure for this incredibly invasive disease."
The event starts at 11 a.m. Participants must sign in at the registration desk before they start the course.
