Our Rotary club dodged a bullet on Tuesday as the city's committee of adjustment turned down an application to locate a convenience store next door to Rutherford Bingo.

Gail Riccio, our operations manager, and Rotarians Jim Inglis and John Sudnikowicz all spoke eloquently about the potential damage a convenience store could do to this important community venture.
Rutherford Bingo relies heavily on the revenues from the snack bar to pay the operating costs of the bingo hall. Competition from charity casinos coupled with the rising cost of insurance and utlilities have put incredible pressure on the snack bar to offset these costs.
Our speakers made the point that the convenience store was targeting these revenues, looking to draw from the 20,000 customers who play bingo every month.
While the committee of adjustment turned down the application, there is still a possibility of an appeal to the Ontario Muncipal Board. Stay tuned.
