Social and Fellowship night at 30 Knots Distillery.
It was a cold, windy and wet night, but that did not stop over 40 members and guests of the Rotary Club of Greater Geraldton from coming together at the 30 Knots Distillery for a memorable evening of fellowship, food, hospitality, and some top-quality products of the distillation process!
Pres Geoff welcomed members and guests from his podium and invited owner Murray Killen to tell us the story of 30 Knots.Establishing a distillery has been a dream of Murray and partner Kelly for some years. The initial challenge was a location and when 166 Chapman Rd came available it was deemed suitable. An enormous amount of work to fit the building out in sustainable materials ensued. Most of the fixtures and fittings are from re cycled material, in particular timber salvaged from the Islands and various demolition sites around the country! The front doors were recovered from an old house!
The business end of course is the spirits made. But why “30 Knots”? Might be something to do with the Geraldton wind! Their signature gin, not surprisingly, is called “Southerly”, a spiced gin reflective of a Geraldton Summer!
Murray explained the distillation process, and why they can’t call the “Rum” that yet because it must be held in oak barrels for 2 years! But give them a little time! Hoping to have their first batch in 18 months.
30 Knots does not market itself as a restaurant. At present it is only open on weekends. It aims to catch a sunset vibe providing light finger food supplemented with food trucks.
