Guest Speaker Sarah Bell:

An audiometrist, originally came to Australia from Canada as a back packer and has now been in Australia since 2003. She started a local business in Geraldton in 2010.

Everyone knows someone who has hearing difficulties or hearing loss.

Her business is locally owned and independent located in Hermitage St near St John of God Hospital. The business has no ties to any particular manufacturer.

She mainly works with hearing aids and hearing rehabilitation but can make recommendations to ear, nose and throat specialists.

Men experience more hearing loss generally because of their work practices eg. operating noisy equipment.

There is also age related hearing loss which generally starts between 60-65 yrs.

It is also possible that ear pods can induce hearing loss but only if used excessively at higher than recommended decibels.

Modern work practices can mitigate against hearing loss particularly if protective ear gear is worn properly and consistently.

Hearing loss could be described as the world's no. 1 injury

Sarah also deals with Tinnitus which can also be a indication of emotional stress.

There were several substantial contributions by Rotarians detailing anecdotal episodes re hearing.

Questions and contributions by Bob Symington, Claire McElhinney, Ian Taylor, Geoff Wood, Geoff Watson, Grant Woodhams and Janet Martin.

Vote of thanks by Bob Symington who told us of his cochlea implant and his brief moment of fame as a TV star in a Sarah Bell advertisement!
