Bob Urquart introduced his good friend and deckie, Kevin Green for a “Who Am I, Where Have I Been.”Kevin went to school in Midland and left school after his Junior Certificate to start an electrical apprenticeship. His boss was a hard taskmaster and after his four year apprenticeship took an opportunity to work at Hill 50 Gold Mine in Mount Magnet. Kevin saw this as a challenge as his previous boss told him, “He would never make it !!”.
Kevin went to Mount Magnet with his wife Dianne and young newborn to “Make It.”
They stayed in Mount Magnet for four years, in which time Kevin helped build the picture theatre and other facilities.
Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin and Kevin was about to move to Darwin when his father called from Geraldton offering a position with his Liquid Waste Disposal business. So instead of turning right to Darwin, Kevin turned left to Geraldton, where he has been for 45 years.
Kevin was a pioneer in water skiing in Geraldton and with co operation from Bill Perry, the then Town Clerk, developed facilities for the sport.
Kevin’s son, Ryan, under his tutelage, became a National and World Champion Water skier.
The family moved to America so Ryan and Kevin could benefit from the best coaches and develop his talent.Kevin is still a National Selector and a Life Member of Water Skiing Australia.
Ryan is in the National Hall of Fame and about to be inducted into the Oceania Hall of Fame.
Rotary Life:
Kevin has been a Rotarian for 36 years and is a Past President and very involved with the Sydney Memorial including working on the site.
Kevin signed off with the customary, “I’m Kevin Green and you’re not.”
