Julie Clarke: Long time Geraldton resident and more recently a member of the Geraldton Voluntary Tour Guides.

The GVTG are proponents of an Edith Cowan statue memorial. There is now considerable support behind the proposal with the City of Greater Geraldton fully supportive.

Capsule history of Edith Cowan:

Born Glengarry Station, Moonyoonooka via Geraldton on 02/08/1861

Married James Cowan 1879

A mother of five children she is one of the founders of the Karrakatta Women's Club 1894

Becomes a child's right activist and is instrumental in the creation of the Childrens Court 1907

Active in the suffragette movement and is the first female elected to an Australian Parliament 1920

Helps found the Country Women's Association 1923

Cowan died in 1932

Julie Clarke tell us the Smiths, the designers of much of the HMAS Sydney Memorial are building an oversized bronze sculpture of Cowan that will be placed in St GeorgesTce Perth. She says that is possible to obtain a second casting that could be placed outside the Geraldton Courthouse, adjacent to Edith Cowan Square. The budget for the Geraldton Cowan statue would be in the vicinity of $100.000. The GVTG have made considerable progress re funding and have some significant funding pledges. Is Rotary interested?
