Ron Krebs is very proud of his accomplishments since being elected San Juan County Sheriff in 2015. He credits his 'team' of 10 emergency service dispatchers, 2 correction deputies, 18 deputies (including new female deputy), 3 civil office employees, criminal deputy/accreditation manager. Court house security (pending). Working with a current budget of $6M ($1.7M increase since 2015).

Two major projects pending: Radio System Project, replacing antiquated system of the
60's, to be completed end of March. National Accreditation: Standards and Best
Practices. Process should be completed this summer.

Questions from members...recruiting challenges? "sentiment around the nation, news media, defund police and anti-law enforcement has made it more difficult to attract people to come into this profession. Negativity surrounding everything today - it's really made it a challenge." Also, high cost of living on the island.

Major issues? Domestic violence is up; pandemic related, financial stress, and population growth. More mental health-type crimes. Major crime is not seen here; nationwide, but we have been "insulated". Not law enforcement, it's an inequality problem. Concern that we'll experience another incendiary moment. "Doing the best they can." I feel fortunate to live in such a caring and safe community.
