10th December 2018

Guest Speaker:

Erica Persak

President David welcomed members and guests.
We had 12 registered guests for the evening, almost a record for an ordinary club meeting. They were:
  • Barbara Cole
  • Barbara Ranshaw
  • Jo Sudlow
  • Erica Persak
  • Yanis Nadella
  • Helen Ilett
  • Brenda Bannon
  • Greg Hart
  • Hugh Stowell
  • Brad Noble
  • Laurie Hegvold
  • Geoff Hick, visiting Rotarian
President David welcomed our guest speakers from the Kerry Stokes Collection, Erica Persak and Yanis Nadella who will be introduced by David Smith later.

Attendance: We had 17 apologies and leave of absences meaning that 45 members should be attending given our normal 2 no-show allowance. However, President David did comment that the numbers looked high so a bottle of wine might yet be in order.

Question of the week was which is the longest river in WA? The winning table was Anita Bourke’s who answered correctly with the Gascoyne River.

Birthdays and Anniversaries: This week there were no member birthdays. However, there were 2 partner birthdays, Debbie Halbert on the 11th and Lindsey Sheppard on the 12th and 3 anniversaries, Chris Cole, 49 years on the 13th, Win Jones, 52 years on the 14th and Bruce Jeanes, 18 years on the 16th.

Committee Reports:
Charitable Trust, Secretary and Treasurer had no report. Treasurer reported that the Golf Day raised $13,000 before costs, the excess will go to Esther Foundation.
The attendance for the week was called for and Kent announced, with MUCH regret that we had 47 members in attendance. Many groans from the crowd.
Following reports were given by Committee:
  • Club Services – John Bolto thanks Richard Ranshaw and all the helpers for the great party on Saturday night. Also a big thanks to Cupid Catering who also did a great job. Richard also thanked David and Tanya for all the hard work they had put in to make the event a success. Everyone was reminded about the Family BBQ on 21st January, get your guest list prepared now, please? Lastly, fellowship meetings on 7th and 14th January.
  • Community Service – Nigel thanked everyone for their contribution to a great Cans for Christmas event, larger collection than last year.
  • Vocational Service – no report
  • RI& International – Cambodian hospital project has been withdrawn as they have been able to achieve a large donation of equipment from Roche. Another project associated with the same hospital will be planned, more news in the new year.
  • Public Relations – Kevin Jackson expects an article in this week’s Post re the Cans for Christmas appeal.
  • Membership – 3 new members to be inducted on 17th December given all badges etc arrive on time.
  • Youth – Kim Smith announced that Peter Smith had a meeting with Dalkeith Primary last week and they wish to start a discussion about an EarlyAct Club at the school.

Cadu came 3rd in his age group at
the Hillarys Triathlon on Sunday.

President David gave a brief report on the Cans for Christmas and Cocktail Party, he thanked all those involved in making these events the success that they were. He also mentioned the AGM at 6.15pm next week, 17th. Lastly, he gave an update on the Esther Foundation, a donation will be made so each girl has a $50 gift card for Christmas plus a top up to the solar panel project of approx. $8,000 to allow it to be completed. These costs are all within the budget allocated to Ether for FY19.

Sergeant’s fines session was not recorded, my apologies.

                 Guest Speaker Erica Persak
Erica Persak gave a very compelling talk on the Kerry Stokes Collection and its importance to the preservation of WA and Australian historical documents. We will distribute a copy of this speech and presentation separately.

Close: President David wrapped up the meeting by thanking Erica and Yanis for their excellent talk and expressed a wish to visit the collection at some time in the future if possible.
David thanked the NGC staff, Denise and Chris. He thanked Bunch Caterers Ros and Amando.  He acknowledged Sponsors Lizzie Bee Florists, Butler Settineri (Club Auditors), Paragon Consultants (Charitable Trust Auditors) and PSZ Accounting (Charitable Trust software).
He called on members to recognise RI President Barry Rossin’s Presidential theme for the year, Be the Inspiration. Members were asked to acknowledge the Flag.
