President David opened the meeting at 6.28 pm on 12th November.
President David noted the early start in an attempt to finish on time.
John Thornton led the meeting in singing the National Anthem at an increased tempo, in accordance with the President’s wish.

John Lindquist advised of his attendance at the funeral of PP Fred Stone in Busselton. His eulogy contained references to his fond memories of DRC.

Charitable Trust:
David Smith reported that 11 members attended the AGM earlier in the evening. The meeting discussed diversification into more international investments.
David also advised the members of a Cambodia Family Support project he recently participated in, providing a toilet block and water supply for an ‘outback’ school.

Treasurer:
After reviewing recent transactions in the Club’s accounts, Anthony queried members’ eating and drinking habits (fruit cakes and wine purchases).
Updated figures: Business Lunch $15,340; Film Night $4,020.

44 members and guests, with late apologies from Tom Langley, Craig James, Russel Hawkins and Tim Humphry.

Community Service
Cans for Christmas kits were distributed to members for delivery in the first week of December no earlier than the evening of Tuesday 4th, with pick up from 9 am on Sunday 9th.
Still, have 420 shopping bags available.
Vocational Service
Payments requested for the Duyfken cruise.
Nominations are required for this year’s Vocational Service and Pride of Workmanship awards.

President David reported on recent and future events.
1. Question of us all -"to whom have we each recently spoken to about Rotary - and have we also invited them to attend a Club Meeting?!"
2. Club Events -busy time of the year for the club and we need to ALL put our hand up to contribute & participate. Some members are making massive contributions and are to be applauded - however, need willing participation from all 60 Active Rotarians in ALL of our club's scheduled events, please !
Calcutta Night - 18 attended with partners.
Events: Recent/ club participation vs av. club meetings = 40+ / 70% attendance!? Coin collection -some 20 participated [33% Active) no shows (30% Act]+ 7 partners.
Guess who's coming to Dinner -attended 24R [40% Act]+ 24 partners
Super Bike count -just managed to get 20 counters [33% Act.]

Osteoarthritis
Jay was introduced by

Jay advised he would concentrate on problems of the knee. He described the function of cartilage and explained articular cartilage stress.
Major risk factors are:
- Age/genetics/obesity,
- Joint trauma,
- Occupational repetitive joint usage.
It is a disease and may lead to:
- Obesity
- Reduced muscle strength,
- Joint mal-alignment.
Pain/inactivity cycle explained.
Management options:
NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL
- individualised program essential,
- appropriate dosage,
- walking/cycling/water exercises have different loads on knees,
- weight loss,
- massage/manual therapy,
- assistive devices,
- thermal treatment,
- counselling/education.
PHARMACOLOGICAL
- oral and injectables,
- intraarticular corticosteroid injection,
- glucosamine/chondroitin,
- viscosupplementation (Duralane),
- platelet rich plasma (PRP),
- stem cells.
SURGICAL
- arthroscopic procedure,
- total joint arthroplasty.
There are many ways of managing osteoarthritis.
Evidence does not always ensure benefit.
Acknowledge the placebo effect.
Multimodal approach is imperative.
Jay answered several topical questions from members.

FUTURE EVENTS: President David reminded members of the future club events.
Spring continues the start of busy months in our Rotary calendar.
1. Rotary Foundation Showcase was held last Sunday 18th November at the central Rotary Training Facility in the CBD - an RI & District Training initiative + club member(s) attendance mandatory for us as a club to qualify for RI matching grants in 2019/20 [attended were Anita Bourke and David Ellis]. Rotary Foundation donations wanted from clubs to help fund both District and Global matching grants.
2. District invitation to attend Rotary Forum of the Future Monday 3rd December from 5.30 pm at Rotary training Facility [ and make-up accepted]; as a follow up to the districts earlier Forum on the Future of Rotary in our District - Report on that earlier workshop's available - let me know if interested and I can also RSVP by 25th November for any of our club members should they be interested in attending.
3. Club's Christmas Cocktail Party Saturday 8th December from 6 - 8.30 pm; final acceptances to event organiser, see Richard Ranshaw - at a subsidised cost of $50pp'
4. RI Convention 1 -5 June 2019 in Hamburg Germany - know PE John Bolto is keen to have a group from our club attend - and so it's suggested that we have 'an on to conference chairman 'from the club nominated to co-ordinate - and thanks to PP Bob Davis and 2 time RI Convention attendee himself allowing himself to be press-ganged in to doing so.
5. Zone 1 Meeting- for our RCD as part of our 9 Western Suburbs clubs last Thursday and Science & Engineering Challenge extended to lone Clubs to participate with our RCD Richard Gorham and his team.; also much discussion on Cans for Xmas and roles 5/6 participating clubs are playing to support our RCD initiative here; also successful use of 1b' to communicate effectively - noting 9455 'Social Media Seminar - 21 st February 2019' to learn more.
6. Next week's guest speaker Bill Farrell - speaking to us on 'Symphony of the Sea.'
