Jon Steward has organised a visit to the Harry Perkins Institute – “Live in the Lab”. Being held on 18 Sept 2019 10 am at $35 pp (max 20 people per group). He will ascertain interest next week.
The Post will be running an article on medical equipment going to Cambodia as part of the Nokor Tep project. They will also be running some stuff on the Parkinson’s – Walk in The Park event.

Kim noted that RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly) applications will be opening shortly. It is a short residential programme to improve leadership skills in 18 – 25-year olds. If you know of somebody who might fit the bill, please put them forward. RCD has budgeted to support a total of 4 places.

Peter noted the “Walk-in-the-Park” event in support of Parkinson’s. He thanked members for their support and encouraged others to put their name down if they can do so.

Paul Harris Fellowship Award: (Craig James)

It was with great pleasure that Craig James named Graeme Sansom as being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. Graeme’s contribution to the Club has been over a long time and he has just about carried out every function within the Club. He is a highly respected individual and his life has been a testament to living by the Rotary Four-Way Test in business and every other facet of his life. He has also played hockey for at least 56 years - for many clubs, anybody who wants a keeper!
We thank Graeme for helping people in our own community and around the World!
The meeting warmly applauded Graeme for this fitting and justly deserved award.
He was presented with a certificate and lapel pin.

Graeme was speechless Finally he thanked the members and said that over the years he has had a great level of fun and fellowship by coming to Rotary.

Pres John played a short video saying the “Why” is the most important thing to hook people. Saying why is very inspirational. People buy because of why. Communicate from the inside out, WHY - HOW - WHAT. Start with Why.
Rotary Leadership Institute – nominations please (15/9, 6/10 & 20/10)? Karen will be running them hence they will be very different and very good!
Cluster Meeting for Zone 1 attended last Thursday evening. Lots of interesting info that will be discussed with Directors over coming weeks.

Guest Speaker: Club Forum (Pres John Bolto)
The Whys
First of all, let me stress that I don’t have the answers here but I am trying to work with the board and the members to find them. These are important questions to the future of our club and the future of Rotary globally.
The Why of Rotary – The Elevator Speech. In the world today everything is going faster, and people have less time to understand things. The elevator speech was termed to sell your concept in the time it takes to go between floors in an elevator, you have 30 seconds and then I stop you.
It is easy to explain the WHAT, start with Polio and move outwards. It is also easy to explain the HOW, clubs made up of good people acting collaboratively, to achieve a common goal (the WHATs). But why do we do this? Why does Rotary exist, why does the Dalkeith Rotary Club exist? This is your task for the next 10 minutes. I want your table’s elevator speech of The Why of Rotary.
The Why of RCD Meetings – Again easy to explain the WHAT and the HOW as they presently are. But WHY does Rotary have meetings, and why does our club have weekly meetings in the format that they are in. Are they the correct format to achieve the WHY of Rotary or especially the WHY of RCD? I want you to discuss this and give me your thoughts, 10 minutes. Again, elevator speeches, please.
The members were given the task of coming up with a number of Whys for the questions above. Pres John will capture these answers and put them to work.
