Presentation, Guest Speakers:  Greg Thurston - Global Grants
Kevin Jackson introduced Greg who has been a Rotarian since 2000.  His daughter was an exchange student and since that time Greg has been an exchange student host family five times.
Greg noted that for Rugby tragics the City Club is having Michael Cheika at their morning meeting 7:15 for 7:30 am on 7 August 2019.

Greg spoke about the Rotary Foundation and specifically Global & District Grants.
The Rotary Foundation was founded in 1917 by Arch Klump.  Since 1917 the Foundation has distributed US $4 billion.   Another arm is the Polio eradication programme.  This started in 1976 but took a little time to convince the WHO that it was real. In 1988 there were 350,000 polio cases per year.  Last year there were 52!!   These were in the Pakistani Border area.  However, we need to keep this going until it is properly finished.  We can’t stop.

Scholarships:  These start from US $5k up to US $50k.  You can apply for these like a District Grant.  They can also be for post-grad works.   Also, 50 peace fellowships are awarded per year at US $50,000 per year.

Grants:   District & Global Grants are available.
Recently Solemen through Peter Panek was awarded a District Grant for their work in Bali.  Applications for District Grants close 31 May each year.  They are for small scale works and have to be completed in that year.  Need to be matched dollar for dollar.
Global Grants:  Currently one is in process for Nokor Tep Hospital.  Min US $30k up to US $300k.  They are long term and can be submitted at any time.  One needs an international partner Club.  You can get them for projects in Australia, you just need an International partner Club.
Examples;
  • Vanuatu 2015-17 village water project.
  • Vocational training Team to Chhattingarth State, India.    (Freshwater Bay Club) The area had very high childbirth mortality.  After training childbirth deaths fell 20% the following year.
Foundation Contributions; You can join the Paul Harris Society by contributing US $1000 per year.  Russell Hawkins will coordinate this in the Dalkeith Club.  It is different from being a Paul Harris Fellow.
See the website  www.charitynavigator.org which rates all charities in the US.    The Rotary Foundation rates four stars - the highest level.

President John thanked Greg for the good information presented.
