President David Ellis welcomed Rotarians and guests to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
President David welcomed members, Assistant Governor Tim Humphry, Past District Governor Lindsay and guests to the club meeting this evening; with a special welcome for Guest Speaker Darren Lomann from GreenBatch accompanied by Lisa Jane. He will speak about the proposed new recycling plant at the University of WA.
President David invited members and guests to sing the anthem.
Apologies and Leave Of Absence:
There should be 43 members present according to acceptances. However, ClubRunner is still providing challenges to our members and that number is likely overstated.

Family and Friends:
Tom Kendall announced that Andrew Kendall and Veronica Cotea were married at Christ Church Chapel on Saturday. The newly minted Mr and Mrs Kendall will return to London next week.
Peter Robertson announced his family birthday week last week: for his sons Thomas and George and his father, Graeme.
Brian English announced his 5-month-old grandson smiled at him last week while Brian was holding him. A call from the floor informed Brian the boy had “wind”.

Committee Reports and Announcements:
Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins): an apology. President David advised members that Russell has new wine available and it is a fine drop.
Club Secretary’s Report (Craig James): an apology.
Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath): No report.
President David reminded members that Anthony is seeking gold sponsors for the Cottesloe Gold Day in November this year.
Club Service: (John Bolto/John Murdoch): John advised members that there will be a committee meeting on Thursday morning. He will send around a notice.
Community Service: (Peter Robertson/Steve Halbert): Peter announced that they had a committee meeting tonight and Past President Nigel Johnson had kindly agreed to take over Director duties from Peter who needs more family time, with his wife and two young boys, in his busy life. Peter reported that the Dalkeith IGA (Waratah Ave) who are receptive to partnering with the club for the shopping bags. He will be talking to the Florence Rd IGA about likewise partnering. The Rotary shopping bag price is 2 for $5. For batches of 50, the discount price is $100.
Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Tom Kendall): Peter advised his committee had met this evening and was making progress considering potential aboriginal projects.
Foundation and International Service: (Peter Webb/David Smith): Peter announced that his committee met tonight and was considering several projects.
Membership: (Peter Panek/Lindsay Dry): No report.
Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): Kim announced that his committee will meet next Monday. The exchange student Kadu is still seeking odd jobs. An article in the Post about him will appear in the next week or two.
Kim also reminded members that Richard had emailed all members seeking sponsorship for the Science and Engineering Challenge next year.
Public relations: (Kevin Jackson/Jon Steward/John Thornton): No report.
Men ’s Shed … no report.
Other Announcements:
ESRAG Award … PDG Lindsay Dry was invited by President David to come forward and present two individual member awards on behalf of the Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group. The awards were received by Ray House and Tom Kendall for contributions to RI President Ian Riseley’s Tree Planting Challenge. The club also received an award for their work planting trees as a group.
Tim Humphry is now a Past Assistant Governor like PDG Lindsay, having both passed on their respective roles at the end of the last Rotary Year.

Presidents Report:
President David reminded us to all discuss Rotary with our friends and invite them to attend a meeting at our Club.
He advised that Sushil Kumar Gupta from RC Delhi-Midwest has been nominated as Rl President-Elect for 2020-21 - for confirmation in October if there is no challenging candidate.
President David reminded members of the Drought Appeal and the importance of donations through
RAWCS project so that we can gauge the extent of our collective Rotary districts support; this will be
considered by the club's Board this week, but members are also encouraged to give.
Richard Ranshaw's suggestion that all of us at RCD still receiving our monthly Rotary Down Under magazines home delivered in plastic bags might do our bit for the planet in waste plastic control and order future issues to be delivered electronically.
Sergeant: Sergeant Trevor Gorey with Corporal Tim Humphry
Sergeant Trevor commenced collection with the wine table and the birthday celebrant, Nigel Johnson. Tom Kendall was encouraged to contribute a tithe on behalf of Kristen who had won the footy tipping last week as well as makeup for his extended absence with an appropriate donation. Chris Cole and Anthony McGrath celebrated their golfing prowess. Anthony achieved 39 off the stick on the back nine whereas Chris Cole was overheard muttering unhappily during his recent outing.
Ron Wilson was called upon to do penance for his wayward ringing phone earlier in the meeting and Pek Goh was invited to make a contribution for all the free “stuff” that others are apparently putting on his verge. Ray house and Tom Kendall were fined for showing off by planting trees.
Guest Speaker:
Jock Laurie introduced members to Darren Lomann who is a member of the Rotary Club of Perth and Lisa Jane who travelled to Argentina as a former exchange student. Darren entertained the members with an illuminating presentation about the (lack of) plastic reprocessing in Western Austalia (and the rest of Australia for that matter as well) together with his plans to change all that.
The presentation commenced with an excerpt from RI President Barry Rossin’s “theme” video:
Key points made by Darren were:
- Zero reprocessing of plastics occurs in WA.
- Small plastic goes into landfill.
- Larger plastic is baled and shipped to China.
- While we wait, 1500 bottles per SECOND are discarded.
- Reprocessing plastics is simple.
Darren has commenced the building of a reprocessing plant in WA with Rotary and school children as partners. He is seeking Dalkeith to come on board as a sponsor.
Darren’s message to us was to help create the reprocessing industry for WA and leave it as a legacy for our children and grandchildren.
After a lively Q and A session, President David thanked Darren and presented him with a fruitcake and two shopping bags.
Future Events: President David reminded members of the future club events.

The Business Lunch speaker will be the former CSIRO chief executive, Dr Megan Clark AC FTSE who was recently appointed to chair an Expert Review Group into the Australian Space Industry.
