Meeting Notes 24th March 2025
Guest Speaker Michael Paech
 
President Hugh Stowell opened the meeting at 6.30 pm, and the National Anthem was sung unaccompanied.
 
Welcomed our guest speaker, Michael Paech and his daughter, Jessica Wiedemann.
 
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
In kilometres, what is the circumference of the tunnel which holds the Large Hadron Collider?
Answer: 27 kilometres. Correctly answered by Richard Gorham.        
                 
FAMILY AND FRIENDS:       
  • The President said it was wonderful to see Neil Wilkie at the meeting  because since his time in hospital he had fallen down the stairs in his apartment building. Everyone gave a round of applause to express how good it was to see Neil.
BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:  The following birthdays and anniversaries were announced by Susan Watson:

CLUB AND COMMITTEES:
  • Craig James outlined the details of the Georges Haynes Art Exhibition Morning Tea at The Weld Club on Wednesday, 16 April, sent in a circular earlier in the day, and requested bookings be made with Kevin Jackson.
  • Craig spoke about the two nominees for the Vocational and Pride of Workmanship Awards. Paul Haddad has been chosen for the Pride in Workmanship Award, and David Bean for the Vocational Award. They will be recognised at the Club Meeting on 14 April.
ROTARY MOMENTS:
  • Cambodia Family SupportVin and Helen Keane from the Rotary Club of Perth visited Cambodia in early March. They saw Dr Samnang and the CFS operations. Helen writes that the Dalkeith Club as a whole, and individual members, have generously supported CFS over many years, and for this they continue to be grateful. They report that CFS staff continues to work under challenging circumstances.
  • John Fawcett FoundationThe Charitable Trust has recently donated $10,000 to the John Fawcett Foundation. The Foundation undertakes significant work in Bali and visits more than 15 remote villages across Bali, bringing free ophthalmological services to those who cannot afford or access medical treatment. 7,563 eye screenings were conducted, 4,755 glasses were issued, and 468 cataract surgeries were performed. Many thanks to Win Jones and David Miller for their support of the Foundation over many years by being on its Board.  Everyone gave Win and David a round of applause.
SERGEANT SESSION: The following members were fined by Sergeant Jason:
The Wine Table – Once again, the epicentre of indulgence.
Anthony McGrath – For winning golf last week at The Weld Club Golf Day.
Bob Davis – For having his house repainted instead of bulldozed and rebuilt.
Craig James – For sending out a notice about George Haynes’ exhibition at the Weld Club for Rotary members, but forgetting to include the date.
Anthony McGrath (again!) – Departure tax For jetting off to the Maldives this week.
Mike Bissett – For wearing a loud and untucked shirt.
Neil Wilkie – For looking like he’s lost the war.
Nigel Johnson – For losing his walking stick again.
Anyone who went to Christchurch – For winning the Head of the River last week.
Ross McKellar – For stealing the Serjeant's chair while he went to ring the gong.
 
GUEST SPEAKER: Michael Paech – introduced by David Miller
Michael Paech gave an excellent and moving presentation on Angelman’s Disease, which has affected his granddaughter. Great advances are being made in overcoming the symptoms of the disease and finding a cure, not only for infants but children of all ages who have contracted it. Michael and his daughter, Jessica Wiedemann, then gave informed answers to members' questions.
