Family & Friends Announcements:
Leon gave an update regarding Hien. His liver transplant has been successful and he is out of intensive care. It is a good time to think of putting yourself down as a donor.
John Saleeba noted that Dick Sudlow has had a hip replacement. All is good. He will be returning to rowing in 6 weeks!
Peter Robertson noted that August is his birthday month. His Sons celebrated their 3 & 5th birthdays as well as his Father’s 82nd. His father just had a hip replacement but this was recently after his knee replacement. All is going well!

Committee Reports and Announcements:
Community Service: (Peter Robertson)
Peter recently attended a Homeless Hub at the Herrison Club. Some statistics around Homelessness;
- 9000 homeless in WA
- 42% are under 24 years old.
- $145 mil is spent on the issue pa.
The meeting was convened to ascertain whether Rotary wants to become interested in this issue as a project etc.
Also, the Cans for Xmas is set for 9 Dec 2019. He is co-ordinating with Foodbank. Interestingly a portion of what was collected is not reuseable. Due to timing issues Foodbank don’t want the area extended this year.
Tim Humphry also noted that the Polio Coin Collection day is 19th October 2019. To bring it into the 21st Century they will have a card swipe machine. Going Hi- Tech!!
Foundation and International Service: (Laurie Hegvold);
Noted that the Sea Container with medical equipment is ready to go to Nokor Tep hospital.
Also, for those interested in going to Cambodia with Anita please express your interest with Laurie after the meeting.
Men’s Shed: (Trevor Gorey):
Trevor noted that because the Shed has been so successful that the members have taken control of the club which is great. The Steering Committee has handed over control. However, RCD members, Panek, Bisset and Gorey are involved in the Club Control Committees!!
Other Announcements; (Kent Warburton)
The Footy Tipping Competition has been run and won for another year. Some stats;
- 66 entries
- Fund Raising profit to the club, $2,800
The winners all finished on the same points, hence only separated by the margins.
- 3rd Place - Ray Porter $200
- 2nd Place Brian English $300
- 1st Place Annabelle Porter $400
There were 5 other tippers who finished one point behind!
Pek Goh won the Round 23 Tipping with 9 correct tips.

Guest Speaker: John Hopkins - The World of International Golf
Leon introduced John Hopkins who has been closely involved in International Golf for over 25 years. He has refereed many major events. He will be refereeing The President’s Cup later this year in Melbourne.
John is travelling later tonight hence his talk will be strictly to time!
As he goes to the USA many times a year and his name is the same as their renown medical institution, he quoted some recent research. “That women who are a little overweight live a lot longer than their male partners who mention their weight issues!”
A number of interesting issues regarding the Master’s Tournament and Augusta National;
- It is very difficult to become a member. Requesting to become a member is a disqualification.
- Probably only a total of just over 600 members ever!
- Currently around 250 members with 180 active
- The Club has accommodation for 120 people on site
- Basically, closed every year from May to October
- When playing in one of the Tournaments they have interesting pairings such as Bill Gates & Warren Buffet!
- An extraordinary wine cellar with over 17,000 bottles from some of the finest wineries.
- Members are either tycoons, multi-billionaires and/or those very high up in the world of golf.
The Masters Tournament;
- On the course, they have 12,000 volunteers and 10,000 paid staff.
- Getting tickets is very difficult – face value is only $500 but you will pay much more
- There is a national lottery for the Mon, Tues & Wed of the lead-in week.
- The Township of Augusta has done very well out of the event
- Money - $50-$100 mill in Merch, plus tickets plus TV rights
- The Club has a large tax problem if they changed their status. As such, they are investing very heavily in Golf itself with other Tournaments and the growth of the game. They have the financial power to change the game itself but are reticent to fully wield this power.
US Open;
- They have 50-70 referees at the Tournament. JH has done this over a number of years.
- Previously one went around with the players - this year one was stationary. He was on 3rd & 6th holes. He roughly gave 17 decisions this year.
- In previous times they have had interesting pairing, such as; The Prick Pairings - Biggest DH’s on Tour. The Fat Pairings - Fattest Blokes!
- Scoreboard pairing - Olazabal, May, Begay!!
The Open Championship;
The Open has been played since 1860. The R & A runs the Rules of Golf. JH has refereed over a period of 12 years. They walk the course with the players.
John finished with a delightful story about Seve Ballesteros being so difficult with referees on the course!
