President David opened the meeting at 6.30pm on 13th August.

Welcomed Guest Speaker, PDG Jerry Pilcher.

John Thornton led the meeting in singing the National Anthem.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Question: What was the significance to English Cricket of the First Test against India which finished at Edgbaston on 4 August?

Answer: It was the 1000^th Cricket Test played by England.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:

George and Elizabeth Melville 54 years on 15^th Aug.

Sue Jeanes 19^th Aug.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

No news.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Charitable Trust:

Russell advised the Trust is about to make distributions to several beneficiaries for the coming year.

A wine list was distributed for orders. President David complimented the standard of the wines on offer.

Secretary:

Board Meeting next Monday at John Bolto’s apartment.

Treasurer:

About half of the members have paid their subs. Anthony requested remaining members to pay before month’s end.

Cottesloe Charity Golf Day looking to be very positive for RCD, however still seeking Gold Sponsors.

Attendance:

Ian Ritchie noted last week’s attendance as 45 members + 23 guests. This would qualify for a wine purchase by the President, however, Ian requested that members reprieve President David as there was an error in calculating the attendance at the 2^nd July meeting when he bought the wine. This request was voted down by the members.

Club Service:

John Murdoch is distributing fruit cakes whilst Richard Ranshaw is laid up.

Community Service

There are now about 1400 bags in Richard Sudlow’s garage following several purchases by other Clubs.

Vocational Service

Peter Marfleet advised there will be a meeting next Monday.

Rotary Foundation and International Service

Peter Webb advised there will be a meeting next Monday.

Public Relations

Ray House reported on an RI campaign to promote Rotary. There will be a quarter-page article in RPYC quarterly magazine on Rotary supporting disabled sailors via the Sailability Program, some of whom have competed at World Championships. Ian Ritchie requested members to consider volunteering to assist with this program.

Membership and New Members

Peter Panek advised the average age of Club members is 70.2 years.

Youth

Kim Smith reported that Carlos (he prefers the name ‘Cadu’), had settled in with his host family, the Mellors, and enrolled at Shenton College. He thanked Steve Halbert for the bike and Peter Panek for the helmet Carlos is using. There will be an article in next week’s Post Newspaper. And a Committee meeting on Monday 27^th.

Men’s Shed

Trevor Gorey advised that Peter Panek had inspected the proposed building and found it suitable. Showgrounds Men’s Shed Inc. has been incorporated, and about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the RAS for 20 years with a 20-year option. This news was acclaimed by all members present.

Presidents Report:

David Ellis reported that the blankets donated by Qantas were already being seen distributed by Red Cross.

RAWCS have instigated the 2018 Drought Relief Fund Appeal for Australian Farmers. It will be considered at the next Board meeting but is also open for all RCD members privately.

RC Matilda Bay has a former RYE student and now active Rotarian in RC Lombok who has appealed for any assistance Clubs and members can provide for recent earthquake victims.

Ray House has been appointed as Club Protection Officer.

Ian Ritchie for asking “What’s the question of the week?” indicating that he had not read the Bulletin.

Anthony McGrath for claiming to ‘be a good bloke’.

Tim Humphry then ‘bought the box’ to point out the elevated position of PP Craig’s name at the top of the Honour Board whilst there remained room at the bottom.

GUEST SPEAKER:

PDG Jerry Pilcher was introduced by Ken Ilett.

Jerry introduced the Australian Rotary Health initiative “Lift the Lid on Mental Health”. He showed a short video of the introduction by several prominent Rotary members. The initiative will run for three years. 10^th October is World Mental Health Day. Donations are tax-deductible through their website.

Jerry explained the origins and some of the achievements of ARH. In the early 1980s, Victorian Rotarian Ian Scott heard an item on the radio about Cot Death and decided Rotary could help. Research into SIDS has saved many young lives. Other programs of ARH include Cool Kids, dealing with bullying; research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND); a lung transplant program; and research into pancreatic and bowel cancer.

From the early 2000s, ARH has concentrated on mental illness. Areas of involvement include Youth depression and Teen alcoholism. A research grant was provided to investigate post-natal depression.

Rural Nursing Scholarships enable rural nurses to attend University. An Indigenous Health Scholarship enabled a nurse from Port Hedland to undertake a psychology degree through Deakin University.

Teen Mental Health First Aid assists teenagers to recognise mental health issues among their peers and to take action before it is too late.

Why ‘Lift the Lid’ now? It is now acceptable to talk about mental health. 1 in 5 under 25 years, and 1 in 7 under 14 years will have a mental health issue.

Mental health will affect everyone. More research and more grants will help reduce the size of this problem. 100% of all donations go to research.

Jerry advised that RCD had contributed $72,000 to ARH, including $2,500 this year already. He expressed thanks to RCD on behalf of ARH.

Questions from members:

Peter Webb asked if ARH visited schools. Jerry advised he was not aware, but would revert.

Tim Humphry commended the research into mental health but asked why ARH did not provide support services. Jerry responded that other organisations provide support. ARH believe that research is the best way forward.
