Next Wednesday Kevin has arranged for The Post to take photos of the Men’s Shed signs going out on the main road.

A visit to the Harry Perkins Institute has been arranged for the 31 Oct 2019 - $35pp

Kevin has also arranged for a visit to the Holmes a Court art Collection.  More details to follow.

On 12^th Dec 2019, a special visit to the WA Ballet has been arranged.  This will include a special performance, plus A reserve seats, champagne & canapes at the interval in a special room.  All for a bargain price.

Kevin is organising with Anita a Movie Night in October 2019.  Stay tuned!

Trevor Gorey was honoured to introduce Anita Bourke because she is a remarkable member of The Rotary Club of Dalkeith by her remarkable efforts and work ethic.

Highlights of Anita’s talk follow;

She was born and grew up in an SW town in Ireland called Gorey.    Hence her childhood was in this town not far from Dublin.  It is famous (amongst other things for Jonathon Swift having visited).  It has lovely beaches but they are a little cooler than Australia’s. Her father was a local pharmacist with the name Roche - hence they all thought he made all the drugs!  He was a quintessential family man, sound ethic, calm, read poetry and The Iliad in the original Greek on holidays. They lived by a lot of Family Saying - most of which we all know.  The most telling was – “Those who are given much - much is expected”. Anita is the eldest of 5 children - 4 doctors and a lawyer! Another great Life Lesson was to always complete your tasks!  If you start - finish! As can be imagined with such a good family her childhood was sort of idyllic and extremely enjoyable.  Plenty of freewheeling and adventures.   At 8 yo she had a hip problem which required 4 months in bed.  she read everything.  At 12 years old she went to Boarding School.   It was obviously very well run and encouraged very high achievement - they had to be “Rays of Sunshine in the World”.    At this time, she also spent Summers in France. After her education, Anita went into Medical School.

Australia made them who they are as they both had to be very self-reliant.  However, it can be very difficult adjusting to a different culture not to mention the language.  Such as, the speed limit was in km/hr, not mph!  When people said someone was crook - they weren’t making a moral judgment.  “See you later” didn’t really mean they were catching up at a later time!

As is normal for a young married life - it is not all easy.  One has a difficult time.

Her father had prostate cancer and died at 58 years old.  Her Mum died at 80.

Running a family and having a full-time demanding career certainly tests one.

John is a retired GP. Anita has been involved in Radiology particularly breast imaging.  She did join a private practice at one time but this was too difficult with a family.  She wanted to ensure she guided her children, not carers.  Her son JJ is in geriatrics and her son Michael is a physio (recently engaged).  Daniel has also just got engaged.

Anita has had a 37-year career in the Public Health system.  She was the first radiologist to study both radiology and nuclear medicine at Charlie’s and possibly in Aust.  She loves playing with her remarkable suite of imaging machines and has been involved in much research.  She has had 30 peer reviewed papers published and was involved in a microscope in a needle that can scan tissue.

Her Hobbies;

A while ago she became involved in the Nokor Tep hospital.  This is a wonderful project which will do much good.

Anita feels very blessed and would not change anything!

The future will involve a few holidays to great places, Nokor Tep and Grandchildren!
