Weekly Meeting Invitation (August 7th, 2023)

Message from our President

Dear Fellow KGMians,
It’s my honour & privilege to take up the position of President of the largest Rotary Club in Hong Kong for year 2024-24.

The last 3 years have been difficult with the protests and Covid-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. I would like to congratulate the past 3 Presidents, PP Gautam, PP Vishal & IPP Simon for doing such a great job under these circumstances.

With relaxing of COVId restrictions and opening up of HK to travel and tourism, there are a lot of opportunities for me as President. Although, we are a very hardworking Club, it’s time for us members to have some fun and relaxed fellowships - karaoke sessions, travel to Macau, picnics, hikes, junk trips etc. On the membership front, I would like to increase the number of female members in our Club and make the membership more proactive.
We need to work as a team to increase attendance for our lunch meetings and fellowships.

With regard to Mental Health which is a big issue in Hong Kong, I intend to devise a concrete plan alongwith my wife, Shirley and other KGM members for devising strategies to combat this serious problem amongst the children, youth and elderly in Hong Kong.

Let me end with a great quote from the singer, John Lennon
There are no problems - only SOLUTIONS

Let’s Create Hope in the World!!

Kind regards,
President Richard Albuquerque

Rotary Knowledge Section:

Fact #3)
Paul P. Harris founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905 was born in Racine, Wisconsin. At age three, when his family fell on hard times, they moved to Vermont to live with Harris’ paternal grandparents. He attended Princeton University, the University of Vermont and the University of Iowa. For the next five years he worked odd jobs as a salesman and reporter for a newspaper, on fruit farms, as an actor, a cowboy, and on cattle ships that traveled to Europe. Harris eventually settled in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, where he lived until his death in 1947.

He began his law practice in 1896 in Chicago. In 1905 Harris organized the first Rotary club “in fellowship and friendship” with three business associates, Silvester Schele, Gustavus Loehr and Hiram Shorey. His initial goal was to create a club of professional and businessmen for friendship and fellowship. Early on, Harris realized that Rotary needed a greater purpose. While Harris served as president of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907, the club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public toilets in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first service club.

Harris had great ambitions for the growth of Rotary, and very early in the organization’s history new clubs were started, first on the West Coast in San Francisco, and then all over the US and in Europe.

Paul Harris died on January 27, 1947. More than 300,000 Rotarians mourned. An outpouring of contributions to The Rotary Foundation created the Paul Harris Memorial Fund, which continues to support the Rotary Foundation.

*NEW* Knowledge & Fun Facts on Money / Finance / Investment / Stock Market:

What Makes a Stock Price Go Up?

In the short term, stocks go up and down because of the law of supply and demand. Billions of shares of stock are bought and sold each day, and it's this buying and selling that sets stock prices.

Who is buying and selling stocks each day?

Institutional investors are the big guys on the block—the elephants with a large amount of financial weight to push around. They are the pension funds, mutual funds, money managers, insurance companies, investment banks, commercial trusts, endowment funds, hedge funds, and some private equity investors. Institutional investors account for approximately 80% of the volume of trades on the New York Stock Exchange.

How do the Institutional investors buy and sell?

Algorithmic trading, which relies heavily on programmed computer instructions, accounts for 60%-73% of equities trading on U.S. markets, 60% in Europe and 45% in the Asia Pacific, according to Select USA.
Algorithmic trading dates back to the 1970s with the introduction of the “designated order turnaround (DOT)” system by the New York Stock Exchange. It marked the first foray into electronic order systems, setting the stage for modern high-frequency trading.

Next time if you feel that you missed the boat, don't feel too bad, you have little chance to beat the machines. Just take your time, find solid businesses with consistent earnings and dividends, and when Mr. Market (more on him next time) presents you with an opportunity to buy shares of these businesses and crazy sale, buy it and just hold them (Forever is the best time as suggested by Warren Buffet).

The ABCs of Vitamins: 13 Essential Vitamins and Why You Need Them

Vitamins and minerals are essential substances that our bodies need to develop and function normally. There are 13 essential vitamins and each one plays a unique and vital role in keeping your body healthy. Vitamins aid in the growth, development, and function of all the cells. Your body cannot produce enough vitamins on its own, so we need to get them from outside sources. While many people take a daily multivitamin, most can get all 13 essential vitamins from foods and enriched foods. Multivitamins cannot take the place of eating a variety of foods that are important to a healthy diet.

Below are details of each of the essential vitamins:

12. Vitamin B12

B12 is the heavy hitter of the B vitamins. Vitamin B12 plays an essential role in making DNA, the unique genetic material found in all of our body’s cells. It also aids the body in making red blood cells and protects nerve cells.

How much do you need?

Adults typically need 2.4 mcg per day.

What should you eat?

B12 is naturally found in animal products like beef, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products. Vegetarians and vegans are more at-risk for developing a B12 deficiency because of their diet and may need to take supplements or increase their intake of fortified foods.
