Captains Log 21-10-24
This week at Rotary was a highlight of our calendar year. The annual Taieri College speech competition. Jarrod Cone an English teacher from the college said this was his 20th year bringing students along for the speech competition. We had four very capable students, Rachel Waters, Aiden Smith, Sneha Kasibhatla and Holley Pool. They all had different subjects but the winner on the night was Rachel Waters. Her subject was “Should children be on social media?” Her speech was clear and easy to understand, and she finished right on the seven-minute mark. Rob Van Abs filled the Sergeant’s role and seemed to be able to extract a good few dollars from everyone present and even some of the parents who had come for the speech night felt the need to donate. Not wanting to sound like a broken record but the caters had provided a very nice meal again which left us with no shortage of food and the quality was first class. It’s a pleasure to go to Rotary when we have good food good friends and a warm room. The year is passing quickly by and before we know it Christmas will be upon us. It would be great to see you all again in a fortnight on the forth of November
Robbie's Paul Harris 2 Sapphire Pin
President Merv recently gave Robbie a pin, but a bit of mystery seemed to surround why he was being given this and what it was all about.
Robbie was actually awarded a Paul Harris 2 Sapphire award, a few years ago - when Mike Lord was President. At that time Robbie's achievements were acknowledged by the club but for some reason he did not receive his pin. Lea and Irene became aware of this, recently so set about to put that to right. With a bit of work and help from Mike, they were able to piece together the story and get a pin sent to the club.

Irene did misplace the pin briefly, when she gave a box she thought contained the pin to Merv, to find there was no pin inside. Once she got back from her Rotary exchange to Africa she had time to locate it and pass it on to President Merv to give to our worthy recipient.
Congratulations Robbie, for extended commitment and service to Rotary, continual upholding of Rotary values and ways and for being so good with Club Runner and teaching us young bucks a thing or two, we thank you.
Christmas Giving Tree
Each year the ANZ bank hosts the Christmas "Giving Tree", on the tree are tags where each tag represents a child in need, the tags advised whether the child is a boy or girl and age. People are invited to exchange a gift for the tag.  This year, along with Taieri Rotary club we invite members to donate to the tree via our club charitable trust and the charitable trust directors have indicated that a further donation from the club will be made.  If you wish to participate please either give the money to Dave or deposit any money directly into the Trusts account, ref Giving Gift.

Why join Rotary????
How many times have you been asked what does Rotary do?  Why should I join? What can I get out of Rotary? What's in it for me? Or you've simply tried to quickly explain what Rotarian does?
Think about an event, project or activity the club has participated in and aline these with "10 reasons to Join a Rotary Club"
