Thanks for those who attended last week’s meeting, it was sad to hear that one of our past members, Colin Flett, had passed away. Colin first joined at Milton Rotary in February 1967. Thanks to all who went to his funeral. A special thanks to Rob for preparing a beautiful eulogy on our behalf.
Stephen’s talk on the Otago Rescue Helicopters was very informative about the cost of running this service in Otago. It was amazing to see how many call outs was required by this service.
The next Rotary meeting will be held on Monday 16 May at the White Horse Inn, Milton. This will be followed by a Directors’ meeting.
Thanks to Glenis for sending out the Salmon sales notices. Reminder that orders are to be in by Tuesday 31 May.
I wish everyone a good start to the new month and keep safe.
Brendan Bearman talked about how Fonterra changed how they pick up milk. Silos now have computer on the side with milk temperature being measured going into silo, in the silo and volume of milk in the silo measured.
Last year Fonterra saved $85million in fuel by using the data available.
Our speaker this week was our own Colin Calteaux who shared the change in his company since Colin, Lynne and his two sons purchased Andrew Haulage 10 years ago. Earth moving and drainage are major areas of work, along with developing footpaths. Colin also has forestry roading crews where they are contracted to Rainer Forest to build forestry roading. Andrew Haulage has also been involved in farm developments for example, effluent ponds and wintering pads. Wintering pads require drainage and holding ponds which hold effluent for 3months.
Originally there were 15employees. This rose to a maximum of 62 and has now settled at 45.
One of their biggest contracts has been at Marina Terrace in Wanaka. This was supposed to be a two-year development and is now just finished after five years.
Clutha Concrete is a subsidiary of Andrew Haulage – they guarantee to deliver concrete 24 hours a day. This year they have delivered 4203 cu meters – 1100 loads.
Chipping Plant – they have two big chippers working all year round. They supply Silver Fern with 3 loads of chips per day for their boilers.
This year Colin’s son, Troy, won the national excavator competition, for a second time.
The biggest risk for the company now is Covid. They are finding it difficult to get parts and prices are increasing rapidly. Colin gave an example of a part that three months ago cost $270, now costing $580. Cement has gone up 15% in the last month – it is all imported.
Stephen, Jackie, Mark and Glenis attended an evening of celebration at the Balclutha Town & Country Club last Thursday. It was a evening of sharing the success of the projects undertaken over the past two years – originally designed to be part of the 9980 District Conference under DG Tania.
Well done to Tania for organizing this lovely celebration event – it was great to hear from the recipient of each of the grants/projects.
Projects shared with us included the following:

Future plan to have some seating installed and plantings, and a fairy glade.

Rosebank School - grant for new entrant play area. Sarah shared photographs of outdoor mud kitchens, a fence, seating. Some great painting of murals on the ground had been completed. There was also a small garden with a few fruit trees. They are hoping to extend the garden and develop a roof to allow more all-weather play.

This was an amazing array of projects - thank you to Tania Lowery and Phil Atkinson for developing this wonderful idea. $37,000 from the Balclutha and Milton Rotary Clubs was donated, along with lots of volunteer hours to make the projects happen.
Christmas Tree expo – the Co-operating Parish is holding a Christmas Tree exhibition Friday 17 – Tuesday 21 December. Entry is a gold coin donation – any profits to go towards the Family Fund Days 2022. Make sure you go along and have a look – and vote for the People’s Choice Award.
