President's Message 27 February 2023

Kia ora
Thanks to Robin for chairing our last meeting.
Thanks to all those who have been involved with the Tramping Club trips this season - there are quite a number over the remainder of the season.  Lets hope the weather continues to hold up for those, although I know many of you are crying out for rain for your farms and gardens.
Our next meeting is this Monday - 27 February.  I will be sharing the journey of moving our batch to Crystals Beach.
Regards Ross P.

Notices
Manuka Gorge – a seat in memory of Ken Robins is to go there.  Peter Mallon and members of the Men’s Shed are going to do some tidying up around the Manuka Gorge tunnel.

Milton Community Garden – thank you to those who helped with the construction of the greenhouse last Wednesday.
Trip Reports 13 February
Glenorchy Adventure – a very good trip which all members of the group really enjoyed.  The jet boat ride on the last day was a firm favourite.  Thanks to Steve McLay and Jill McIntosh for leading this trip.

Kepler – David Vollweiler and Stephen Woodhouse enjoyed a great trip with 18 participants.  They had great weather throughout, although very humid at times.

South Coast Track – this trip is under threat at present as the Wairaurahiri River is too low for the jet boat – the form of transport for the end of this trip.  Like local farmers, they are hoping for some rain!

Clutha Gold Extension
We were lucky enough to have Geoff & Will, from Tourism Central Otago, attend our Rotary meeting and share some of the filming they had spent the day doing on the Lawrence to Waihola section of the trail.  Suzie & Brendon Bearman, David Vollweiler and Ian Mills spent the day cycling parts of the trail.  The target audience for the marketing is not cyclists; it is more people on holiday who have a bike, and tends to be more retired or semi-retired people.  The Trails’ marketing is funded by Queenstown, Clutha Gold, Dunedin and Wanaka cycle trail groups.
Geoff is the Trails Marketing Director and has started a website called Trailhub, a site which shares local ‘stories’ about towns and places of interest on the trails.  For example, a group of local iwi were planting native seedlings on the Sinclair Wetlands, and, the story of how Bob and Islay at the Waitahuna Coffee Cart about how Islay’s parents met on the platform of the Waitahuna train station.  Geoff and his team are keen to hear of more interesting stories.
Thank you to Geoff and Will, and the four cyclists, for sharing their experience with us.
RYLA Queenstown 2023

Oliver Gordon-Glassford attended RYLA late January to early February this year and shared his experiences as our speaker at the last meeting. Ollie began by describing the event as a life-changing experience!
RYLA is aimed at 18 – 30-year-olds and 38 participants attended this year.  The participants were divided into four teams which were the basis for their project work.  Ollie’s team project planning a geocache course for 8+ year olds and an outdoor Jenga game.  Their geocaching spots were based around the characters of Winnie the Poo and the theme of friendships.
Over the four days of the programme, an amazing array of great speakers presented to the group.  These included:
  • Karen Purdue (Past District Governor 9980) who focused on the strengths of a leader.  This session involved the participants identifying 3 key strengths and identifying three traits they each wanted to develop.
  • Aaron Flemming (DOC boss for the southern South Island is a published author, in-demand public speaker and an Ironman triathlete) spoke on the Power of Persistence.
  • Rosemary Chalmers (successful Salon chain owner, business coach and public speaker) led a session on the Importance of a Cohesive Team.
  • Shayne O’Connor (ex-Black Cap) talked about team culture and workplace culture.
  • Jan Boustad (District Governor 9999) spoke about the different branches of Rotary.
  • Paddy Turner (Queenstown Toastmasters) shared his skills as a public speaker.
  • Laura Koot, a Southlander who returned to her roots after a successful career in finance, and founded Real Country.  The focus of her presentation was on the importance of doing what you love.
Tuesday morning saw the participants woken at 4am to take part in a hike up Queenstown Hill to watch the sunrise.  Ollie said this was a very rewarding experience.  That night a BBQ, to which local Rotarians were invited, was held.
On Wednesday the group participated in a Service Project which involved tidying, clearing and planting a   gully walk near the camp.  They then spent time in the afternoon at a local Adventure Park.
Thursday found the teams completing their Team Projects and preparing for the Gala Night.  Presentations for the Team Projects were made at the Gala Night and Ollie’s team won the best team project award – congratulations to Ollie and his team!
When asked what he had learnt he said: With the right team anything is possible.  Have your end-goal clear. Build a cohesive team.
Well done, Ollie – we will follow your progress with interest.

Passing Thought 13 Feb
Jackie left us with the following thought:
You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.
