Ross Pringle gave a very interesting talk about his (and Jennifer's) visit to Le Quesnoy. It lies in the North West of France near the Belgium border. Le Quesnoy is a 13th century town which was occupied by the Germans in World War One. New Zealand soldiers scaled the wall of the town with ladders and liberated the town. 42 Kiwi soldiers were killed and 131 injured but all 1600 inhabitants were OK. Don Mackinnon is trying to establish a memorial to the NZers in Le Quesnoy.
It was a very appropriate talk given the celebrations being held in Belgium on the 11th and 12th October to recognise the bravery and suffering of the allied soldiers at Paschendale where on the 11th October 831 NZers were killed. This was the highest number of casualties ever, in one day experienced by New Zealand soldiers.
