Program - OSPTIKathy Austvold introduced Gwen Humann and Shawn Krause-Roberts from Orthopedics and Sports Physical Therapy, Inc. (OSTPI) in Fergus Falls. They told us the business has been in Breckenridge for 16 years and in Fergus Falls since October of 2017. They now also have locations in Fargo and Hankinson. Gwen & Shawn gave us a very interesting presentation on preventing low back pain, a problem they said that 1 in 4 people is currently experienced or has experienced in the last 3 months. They demonstrated several prevention techniques such as: - Good posture (they demonstrated a “get set” position and proper lifting technique, stressing the importance of strengthening back muscles and glut muscles, and showed us the difference in our strength with good posture vs. poor posture.....suggested wall pushups as a good preventive exercise).
- Good body mechanics. (Using the two step and keeping belt buckle forward.)
- Strengthening. (we learned that a good exercise to strengthen your glutes is to stand up from your chair without using your hands on the chair or table to assist you.....do this several times per day.)
- Good rest
- Plenty of water
Then the floor was opened to questions and topics covered included the process of retraining the nerves and connections between the brain and the movements of the body, good walking techniques, and how to walk with a cane and with a walking stick(s). The meeting adjourned with a reminder to sell those raffle tickets!
