Skyline Club applies for Rotary International District 5580 District Grant for Health Care Center in Akpugo, Nigeria

Skyline Club applies for Rotary International District 5580 District Grant for Health Care Center in Akpugo, Nigeria

In November 2020 Matt Wicklund brought a program to our Club from Equal As One, a non-profit that had done medical mission trips to Nigeria since 2016 with a family connection. They had assessed the need for a health care center in Akpugo, Nigeria and were proceeding with the project. After further discussion with Mark Zack, President of Equal As One, and our Board we decided to apply for a Grant to assist the project.

While most District Grants cannot apply to “bricks and mortar” projects we determined that the construction of the water supply and sewer systems to support the clinic were very consistent with the seven areas of focus of the Rotary Foundation particularly the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) focus. The Grant Application was submitted on March 31st. We received and responded to a few requests for clarification and now are awaiting word back from the District Grants Committee who meets on April 15th.

We are very hopeful for a good outcome, but no matter the results this was a very good effort by the team that included District Grant Committee Chair Tim LeClair,  Equal As One, Karl Everett (our mentor for the application), the Skyline Board, Matt and Mark, and especially to all of the members of our Club who donate to the Foundation and who sell peaches as these are the funding source for the good work that we do in Rotary. Thank you to all!
