Weekly meeting – Tuesday 13/08/2019

The Honourable Sir Jim McLay, KNZM, QSO

Former Deputy Prime Minister and diplomat

Jim McLay was a NZ Member of Parliament from 1975 to 1987, including as Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Attorney General, and Minister of Justice. He retired from Parliament in 1987, and received the Queens Service Order (QSO) for public services. Before his election to Parliament, he practiced as a barrister.

From 1994 to 2004, he was NZ Commissioner on the International Whaling Commission; and served on the US Humane Society’s International Council of Advisers. In 2003 he was made a Companion of the Order of NZ Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to conservation; and the US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names and the New Zealand Geographic Board named an Antarctic glacier “McLay Glacier” to recognise his IWC work.

From 2009 to 2015, Jim was NZ Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. He led the New York end of NZ's successful campaign for election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2015-2016 term, and led NZ’s representation on the Council from January to May 2015. Later he served as NZ Consul General in Honolulu, NZ Representative to Palestine, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, and Special Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In June 2015, he was made a Knight Companion of the NZ Order of Merit (KNZM) for services to business and to the state. He ceased all official roles on 30 June 2017.

Come listen to Sir Jim share with us “Some diplomatic insights – as viewed from Auckland”.
