Final District 7820 Conference

District 7820 Virtual Conference

Every year a District Conference takes place where gusts speakers present talks on pertinent Rotary items. There are lots of opportunities to network and recharge Rotarian batteries. Up until Covid-19 these conferences took place in person. Covid times have upset opportunities for Rotarians across the District to get together to learn and share ideas that are an integral part of any organization's evolution. This year there was a conference, albeit abbreviated and virtual.

With the merging of Districts 7820 and 7810 to form the new District 7815, this Conference was the last one for District 7820. The new District 7815 takes in all of Atlantic Canada and St Pierre et Miquelon.

Normally only two attend from each club. This year more had an opportunity to attend. Thanks, Louis MacDonald for providing a getaway venue in Black Duck Siding.

Farming for Food Self Sufficiency

At this week's Rotary meeting Louis MacDonald of M & M Farming gave a talk about how Scott Madore and his business is growing (pun intended) to improve the island's food self-sufficiency. Over the three seasons, the business has grown to include several sites from the Codroy to Junction Brook by Deer lake. Their integrated approach to farming, which is highly mechanized, allows them to produce root crops and store them for overwintering consumption. They have also started secondary processing potatoes (french fries). With the addition of greenhouses to their business, they have also started making "salad makings" for local consumption.

Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange

The Rotary Club of Stephenville goes international!

The Rotary Club of Stephenville contributes to many local causes such as the Food Bank and the Hospital Foundation, but there is so much more! The club is associated with Rotary International where among others, issues including safe drinking water and Polio eradication are priorities. For the most part, the local club provides a financial contribution for international projects, however, there are exciting opportunities for those interested in international service or setting the stage to provide opportunities for others.

Maybe the most exciting and rewarding opportunity was in 2005 when the Rotary Club of Stephenville sponsored Allison Lomond to participate in the Rotary Foundation’s (GSE) in the Lagos area of Nigeria. GSE was a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 to 40 years, in the early stages of their careers. For four to six weeks, participants would experience the host country’s culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

Allison, along with three others, was chosen through a very unique and thorough selection process, to form a team. Although the team represented the Rotary District which includes Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the Magdeline Islands, the four participants were from Newfoundland, who, along with the leader from Prince Edward Island, began preparations for the adventure. Then, Allison was off to Nigeria!

Allison stayed with Rotarians and was immersed in a culture where she experienced warm hospitality and gratitude from community members who acknowledged how the work of Rotary International significantly improved their quality of life. While always aware of personal safety concerns and dealing with rolling blackouts from an inferior electrical system, Allison visited many schools, colleges, and universities, attended Rotary meetings, made presentations, and visited Rotary projects. Allison had the opportunity to visit a boarding school for children where Rotary International installed a well, meaning the students no longer had to walk 5 miles, twice daily to carry water for drinking and basic hygiene.

Alison described the highlight of her experience as the opportunity to administer the Polio vaccine. Allison joined others at a public market where children were vaccinated. Parents were approached and with permission, their children received the oral vaccine. Because there was no formal way to record vaccines, as a child was vaccinated, an “X” was marked on their hand so others involved could quickly identify if a child was vaccinated. At the same time, others went by boat to remote communities to vaccinate children and in this case, they would paint an “X” on the door to let others know that vaccines had been administered in that particular home.

Allison noted that first-world countries, because of vaccines, have been shielded from the impacts of Polio and other diseases. While in Nigeria, she saw firsthand, the devastation of severe physical deformities left in the wake of Polio, complicated by a lack of accessibility items such as wheelchairs.

Allison, through the Rotary Club of Stephenville, was able to have one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences of a lifetime. Today, Allison is a Rotarian who truly knows the impact that Rotary International makes in third-world countries.

Although the GSE program has been replaced, Rotary International continues to offer many unique and rewarding opportunities. If you are interested in being a participant, or joining the Rotary Club of Stephenville to provide opportunities to others, you participation is welcomed.

Today, Rotary International offers the following programs:

Rotary Peace Fellowships

Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 professionals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at our Rotary Peace Centers.

Rotary Community Corps

Finding community solutions to community challenges, Rotary Community Corps unites Rotary members with nonmembers to make a positive difference.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is a leadership development program for young people who want to learn new skills, build their confidence, and have fun. Events range from one-day seminars to weeklong camps.

Rotary Youth Exchange

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time. Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens.

New Generations Service Exchange

New Generations Service Exchange is a short-term, customizable program for university students and young professionals up to age 30. Participants can design exchanges that combine their professional goals with a humanitarian project.

Grants

For 100 years, The Rotary Foundation has been turning project ideas into reality. Our clubs receive funding to support humanitarian projects, scholarships, and international exchanges.

Scholarships

Rotary invests more than $7 million a year in our future leaders and philanthropists by funding scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study.

50th Anniversary-History of Women in Our Club

The Glass Ceiling is Shattered!

Once the glass ceiling is shattered, there’s no going back. As women advance in society, they pave the way for others who should never have to face the same discrimination as those strong women who came before them. In the absence of barriers, we forget that the barriers were still in place not too long ago.

1980, for many people, does not seem like that long ago, but believe it or not, women were not permitted to join the Rotary Club of Stephenville until 1980. While they possessed skills such as leadership, organization, financial management, public relations but despite their skills, women were....well, women were women and that made some people very uncomfortable.
The Rotary Club of Stephenville was formed in 1971 and chartered in October of that year. The charter members would have been business leaders and professionals from the local area. From the beginning, there was a commitment to community service, projects, and support for the community. There was a recognition of the valuable contribution of women, however rather than being full members, the women, typically the partner of a member, played a secondary role and were known as “Rotari-anns.” Excluding women from membership, while now seen as discriminatory was an acceptable process for many service organizations at that time. However, society was changing and women were taking their rightful place.

By 1980, there was an expectation that the Rotary Club of Stephenville , would follow the global movement of Rotary International and welcome women to the club. According to a Rotarian in the club at that time, for the most part, the male members had no issue with changing the criteria for membership. The first female to join was Carmel Turpin who was the Editor of the Georgian, the community newspaper. So, once the glass ceiling was shattered, women continued to join.

Today, most leadership roles in the club are filled by women, and gender issues are more of a history lesson than current battles.

50th Anniversary-History of Projects & Fundraising

The Rotary Club of Stephenville is approaching its 50th Anniversary! Most
people are familiar with the Rotary Music Festival and the major annual
fundraiser Auction held at the Legion in November. But, Rotary does so
much more!

Today, the Rotarians contribute to the local Food Banks, The Hospital
Foundation, Long Term Health Care, Status of Women, Kettle Campaign,
and Block the Bus. You see the town Clock at the corner of Main and
Queen St. every day. As you walk through Blanch Brooke park, you see
Rotary Place which is a peaceful area by Blanche Brook where you can sit
and enjoy the peacefulness of the park.
.
Over the years, fundraising activities and projects have changed
according to the needs of the community and the interests of the
Rotarians.

Maybe you can remember the Radio Auction? For many years, local
businesses provided items or services that were used to help the Rotary
Club of Stephenville. The items would be listed in the Georgian and the
auction would be broadcasted on CFSX. This was an exciting event for the
club which included the support of local businesses, newspapers, radio, and
the general public.

We all know that pumpkins are available for sale at many grocery stores in
October. But they weren't always available. The Rotary Club of Stephenville
was the first to bring pumpkins to the area as a fundraiser. A Rotarian
would travel to the Annapolis Valley and purchase the pumpkins for 6
cents per pound (yes, 6 cents!). Although some initial skepticism about
doing something unique, this fundraiser brought excitement and local
customers for many years. The Rotary Club partnered with students
enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh program to sell the pumpkins and in
turn, the club supported the Dukes.

There have even been seal dinners, in partnership with the College of the
North Atlantic, with the co-operation of the staff in the cooking and
hospitality programs.

When you look back over 50 years, the contribution from the Rotary Club
of Stephenville is impressive.. There are also many projects that you may
not remember, such as donating $5000 each year for 5 years to the new
hospital for lobby furniture and sponsoring the Air Cadets in Port au Port.
The list goes on!

As you can see, the types of fundraisers and sponsored projects are open
to the creativity and enthusiasm of the Rotarians. Maybe you would like
to bring your skills and enthusiasm to the club. We would love to meet
you!

After extensive communications with the Provincial Federation of Music Festivals, other Music Festivals across the Province and in consultation with the Rotary Club of Stephenville Music Festival Steering Committee and club President, Mel Dean, a decision has been made to officially cancel the Rotary Music Festival 2020.

We recognize that students have been working hard and practicing to put on a great show for our Music Festival. We want to thank them as well as our volunteer Steering Committee, our sponsors and the community for their commitment to the festival. However, this is a prudent step in an effort to contain the potential community spread of the Covid-19 virus.

Rotarians Plant Trees with Stephenville Leo Club

Posted on Oct 29, 2019
story thumbnail

Past Rotary International President, Ian Risely challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018.

Environmental degradation and global climate change are serious threats to everyone. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming. The result of that effort will be far greater than the environmental benefit that those 1.2 million new trees will bring. The greater result will be a Rotary that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself!

Continuing the tradition we started last year, we partnered with the Stephenville Leos Club and the local MHA, Tony Wakeham. We would like to thank Mr. Wakeham for providing the seedlings that came from the Woodale nursery in central Newfoundland. Thank you to Brenda Dennis with the Leos Club in the planning of this event. We would also like to acknowledge the cooperation of Mr. Mike Campbell, Town Manager with the Town of Stephenville for providing the space and accepting the trees that will eventually be placed throughout the town.

A special thing about Rotary is the fellowship that results when Rotarians participate in Rotary Fellowship Exchanges. The exchanges, financed by participating Rotarians, provide a wonderful way of seeing the world and meeting other Rotarians. This past Wednesday our club hosted 5 Rotarians and their partners from Oregon, USA. Stephenville Mayor Tom Rose hosted our guests at the Town Hall and provided them with a Reader's Digest version of the connection Stephenville has to the USA.

Mel Dean Receives True Rotarian Award

Posted by Chris Soper on Jul 12, 2017
story thumbnail
During the visit to our club by District Governor Don Sword our President Mel Dean was presented with the True Rotarian Award. District 7820 highlighted this event in their newsletter link

"A True Rotarian. Someone who is a person whose activities are a result of his personal goodwill and a  sense that the world will be a better place as a  result of his /her quiet work and effort in Rotary.

A person who conducts him/herself following the 4 Way Test, who is humble, does not flatter wealth, or boast of their own possessions or achievements.  This Rotarian speaks with frankness yet always with sincerity and sympathy. Deeds follow words, and this Rotarian thinks of the rights and feelings of others and is a person with whom honour is sacred.

The “True Rotarian” is the foundation of Rotary: always there, contributing to the current Rotary activity and by any Rotarian’s measure, is the lifeblood of Rotary."

Rotary: Making a Difference

Posted by Chris Soper on Jul 02, 2017
story thumbnail
District Governor Don Sword posted this message on July 1, 2017. It speaks to the 2017-2018 Rotary International Theme.
Since 1949, Rotary International has had an annual theme which focuses our activities as Rotarians for that year. This is more for internal use than for the general public, for whom Service Above Self is a constant explanation of what drives us. According to RI President Ian Riseley, the 2017/18 theme of Rotary: Making a Difference represents what Rotary is and Rotary does, every day and in many ways. All those people who benefit from our great programs appreciate that Rotary exists to make a difference. Further, Rotary makes a difference to ourselves as Rotarians. We are improved as people by following the guiding principles that come from our mission statement and the Object of Rotary.

The world is a better place because of Rotary making a difference!

The 2017-18 theme logo symbolises diversity, with people of all races and backgrounds uniting under the banner of Rotary to make a difference. It also symbolises all of us striving to do better, reaching ever higher to do good in the world, in the name of Rotary. Even those of us who are modest in our achievements can, when combined with 1.2 million colleagues, contribute to making a difference, in our own communities and around the world. The circle shows that Rotary is in almost all parts of the globe.

It is a busy and active design, just as Rotary is busy and active.
