Rapidan Fish Passage Project Update
Jeff Waldon, Director of the Rapidan Institute, will describe efforts by the newly formed Rapidan Partnership to address fish passage problems at Rapidan, VA. The dam at Rapidan was installed in the 1930's and since then several migratory fish populations have been unable to traverse the dam and gain access to breeding habitat upstream. An evaluation is underway to determine what modifications would be required to improve fish passage. The existing fish ladder is unsuitable for shad, herring, and striper, and those species have been detected below the dam, but not above the dam. The dam requires maintenance and represents a potential hazard to boaters and fishermen. Next steps are to evaluate the various components of the dam and the pool behind the dam and come up with a plan in 2021 for modifications in 2022.
