Scholarship Awards 2011
On Monday, August 22nd, 2011 the Rotary Club of Saint John presented their annual scholarship awards to 5 local students, over the last 9 years this club has awarded 33 scholarships totalling over $21,000 ...
This year's winners are
Amy Walton; Emily Carter; April Barrett-Kay; Wesley Tibbett and Mitchell White

April BARRETT-KAY
Ms. Barrett-Kay is a High Honours graduate of Simonds High School.
April's teacher wrote that through her school and community activities, it is clear that April is a compassionate, charitable and hard working person. Her strong work ethic has enabled her to finish the term with the 7 highest mark in her graduating class and I might add, she was able to do this while holding down a part time job at Canadian Tire working up to twenty hours a week.
She has participated in activities such as Run for the Cure, and has been involved with the Simonds High School Clean-up Committee.
April will pursue a post secondary education at University of New Brunswick, Saint John enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program. She is passionate about becoming an Elementary Teacher.
Emily CARTER
Ms Carter is a graduate of Saint John High School. Her school wrote that her attention to detail and her creative problem-solving skills have enabled her to achieve High Honours in that schools IB program.
While a student at SJHS, Emily has been actively involved in numerous activities, including volleyball and choir. Emily has also contributed her energy to Club Hope, Saint John's High school-based service group, which sponsors both global and local charities.
Emily has been accepted to Mount Allison University where she will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree. Her goal is to become a medical professional.
Wesley TIBBET
Mr. Tibbet is a graduate of Harbour View High School. Wesley is a high honours French Immersion student who demonstrates strong commitment to academics, extra-curricular activities, and leadership in his school as well as his community. He was selected to attend Encounters with Canada which takes the top youth in the country to Ottawa for a week long program.
Wesley's list of extra-curricular activities include; football, volleyball, rugby, badminton, rowing and baseball. He has received Most Valuable Player awards in football, volleyball and badminton. In his grade 11 year he was named Harbour View High School's Athlete of the Year.
Academically, Wes has excelled in the sciences and math. He has been awarded the Medal of Academic Excellence each of his high school years in recognition of his superior academic performance.
Wesley has been accepted into the engineering program at the University of New Brunswick.
Amy WALTON
Ms. Walton is a high honours graduate of Saint Malachy's Memorial High.
Amy's teachers spoke very highly of her, with statements such as, "a go getter", "always tries her best", "motivated" and "hard worker". Amy has played rugby, football and has coached cheerleading. In 2010 she won the Carol Nodwell Memorial Trophy for Cheerleading Coach of the Year. She has many athletic accomplishments that also depict Amy's motivation to succeed.
Amy has grown up through the Boys and Girls Club of Saint John, first as a youth member and in recent years as a part time staff member.
Amy will pursue a post secondary education at University of New Brunswick, Saint John enrolled in their Science Program. She plans to specialize in radiation therapy.
Mitchell WHITE
Mr. White is an honours graduate of Harbour View High School.
Mitchell's teacher wrote: "Mitchell is a king, responsible and hard working student. He is always willing to help others, is respectful of peers and teachers and always has a smile on his face. I have no doubt that Mitchell will be successful in his chosen career and will certainly be an asset to any business fortunate enough to employee him upon graduation."
In addition to his academic success, Mitchell's extracurricular involvements included the Scouting program; volunteering at the NB Special Olympics Summer Games; Run for the Cure; Relay for Life; Harbour View High Choir; as well as an active volunteer with his church.
Mitchell has been accepted to the Culinary Arts program at NBCC St. Andrews Campus.
