My thanks to President Duncan Duke and the Montmorency-Eltham RSL for the warm welcome they provided at our Club meeting last week. My thanks also to Bob Elsworthy, President of the Vietnam Veterans Association and a member of Montmorency Eltham RSL for an interesting presentation including his reflections on visits to the various theatres of action involving Australians in WW1. Our relationship with the Montmorency Eltham RSL is strong, highlighted by our collaboration on the Dawn Service at Eltham on ANZAC Day. I look forward to another moving service this Wednesday and I thank all involved including Rob Kilcullen, Ken Paynter, Duncan Duke, and Bill McKenna for their work in making the Dawn Service such a memorable event. Thanks also to all Club members who have volunteered to assist starting from 4.45am on Wednesday morning. You will have deserved your breakfast afterwards at Pieross!
The Board met last Wednesday and its major task was to consider proposals for spending the balance of funds raised this year. Proposals were considered in light of the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year and with a view to continued funding in future years in line with our 3 year strategic plan. We have had an outstanding year in terms of fundraising thanks mainly to extra BBQs and a bumper festival. These efforts have enabled us to support activities both in our local community and internationally. A major focus this year has been in supporting young people in need so we have allocated funding to Diamond Valley Learning Centre, to the Grow Wild/Reconnect program at healthAbility, and the Ellimata Youth Centre in Kinglake. We have continued to support scholarships through CAVE and the various leadership, mentoring and camping programs providing young people with an opportunity to discover, grow and display their talents. My thanks to Ken Paynter and the whole Youth Committee for the work they have done in this space. Aquabox is of course one of our signature programs so we have injected more funding into Aquabox including provision for a marketing and communications strategy. The Community Committee have also been busy this year. Among the Community programs supported is St Kilda Mums - we have agreed to provide funds for the provision of car seats for young mums in need. In the light of the recent tragic accident in which a young local man became a quadriplegic, we have set aside funds to assist his rehabilitation and will foster a relationship with the Next Step Wellness Centre. We still have some proposals to assess including some International projects.
Congratulations to this week’s BBQ team of Kevin Hadingham, Graeme and Lyn Hardiman and Jules Aussems who had a bumper Sunday and netted $1030.70.
Cheers, President Judy

  • Judy Sharp reported on the board meeting held on the 18 April. Highlights are:
    1.  Additional funding for Next Steps will reach $2500 for this year
    2.  The board will also find some additional funding to help Josh Davis
  • Alison Cooper requested assistance with organising the 45th Anniversary of the RCE to be held on 24 May. She asked if members could forward her a list of past members that we could invite on this occasion. Next meetings:  26 April - Nillumbik U3A presentation and 3 May -Youth Night
  • Ron Manison brought attention to the plight of local lad Josh Davis - a young 25 year old struck down with quadriplegia after an accident and without much financial  support. A fund raiser is to be held on the 12 May at the Eltham Community Centre – 801 Main Rd Eltham from 7pm. Ron called on members to assist him with organising the function.
  • Rob Kilcullen issued the Anzac Day morning roster and requested that members be there at 4.45am on Wed 25 April. Car parking at and around the Coles carpark area.
  • Ian Toohill requested Rotarians to think about having their hair shaved at Montmorency S/C on the 3 May. As per last year, Ian will have his shaved off on the day and encourages us to join him to support a great cause.

Youth Committee Report
The Rotary Club of Eltham has been very active with youth in 2018.  We are involved with Reconnect - a youth department at HealthAbility - by providing funds for  "Tuning for Teens"  and "Going Wild "programs as well as providing second-hand mobile phones with sim cards for those students  who need of emergency communication.
Morgan Gallagher, a student from St Helena Secondary College, was selected to attend a 7 day political experience in Canberra during Budget Week through Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC).
We continue to support the Diamond Valley Learning Centre (DVLC), with funds including a Rotary Grant for VCAL computer Chrome Books.
In January students attended National Youth Science Forum in Canberra,YLead leadership Forum and  Lord & Lady Somers Camp.
