Phil was raised in Rotorua and after school worked for the Baker Brothers where he acquired his passion for cars, especially Ford automobiles. After gaining his engineering degree he started work for Ford working his way up through the organisation as design engineer, manufacturing manager, plant manager, general manager and finally an executive vice president. He worked in Australia, Japan, India and China where he became a specialist in managing business associations and joint ventures with local partners.

Phil retired in 2010 and has spent the intervening years following his passions (eg, collecting Mustangs) and consulting in the industry (eg, helping Jaguar Landrover establish manufacturing plants in China). He lives in Melbourne area and has become involved in the redevelopment of Fisherman’s Bend near Port Melbourne.
