Ed Robbins provided an update on his work with a school in Belize. When he arrived this year, he learned that what his students needed most was materials to help them prepare for their exams. He purchased a printer and they subsequently printed thousands of pages of materials to help them prepare. While he was there, another opportunity to help presented itself! Find out how you can help.

The next need for which Ed is seeking help is financial support for a very bright Mayan girl, Yoma, who has been a student of his. Her family is a traditional Mayan family; Mayan is their first language, Spanish their second. Ed was told that Yoma’s father was not likely to agree to send her to high school; her 15 year-old sister, Gloria, was at home helping their mother, and that was the expectation for Yoma.

After Yoma’s mother brought her to an informational session about high school, Ed went to visit with the family. Through this conversation, he realized that Yoma’s father was willing to send both girls to high school, were Ed able to raise the $1300 needed for tuition.

Ed has already secured a local woman willing to be a mentor for the girls, and has secured a commitment of four years of free textbooks and uniforms for the girls. Ed used $650 from the Happy Bucks we donated last year to cover the first year’s tuition for one girl; he needs to raise an additional $650 for next year and $1300 for each of the subsequent three years.
